  • Current DJ who spins most similarly to Golden Prog Years?

A few recent posts on here had me wondering - who do you guys think is the current day DJ who spins in the most similar style to that of the Golden Prog Years?

’Cos Sasha and Diggers used to smash out stuff like Armin ‘Virgo’ at 138bpm, but now it’s mostly plodding melodic/“organic” house that probably never even scratches 130.

A couple of recent James Zabiela sets I’ve heard occasionally seem to capture a bit of that spirit more than recent sets I’ve stumbled upon from other jocks with a direct connection to that scene, but even then there are more influences from the psy-leaning early-mid 90s prog style. Plus he maybe tops out at around 131. He played a remix of ‘Twilo Thunder’ in one of his sets and it was an incredibly tame breakbeat one at about 127 - it was hardly “It rubs the lotion on its skin and plays Twilo Thunder at 133bpm” (copyright Millsy).

I’ve mentioned before that I think the Danish centred/influenced techno/trance sound which emerged about 5 years ago had to my ears seemed the closest, from the likes of Courtesy, DJ Ibon, Schacke, Funeral Future etc. Courtesy even played Sasha & Holden - Bloodlock at its original speed in her last Boiler Room, and I’ve noticed Sasha play a recent DJ Ibon track (but so sped-down as to be near unrecognisable). That lot often go much faster and harder, or sometimes even veer much “wetter”, than the prog lot used to, mind.

Someone like Amelie Lens also isn’t a million miles away from the spirit and scale of the peak prog era, even if their stuff is generally much harder, which is why I thought them doing a GU seemed apt (albeit it wasn’t the best mix I’d heard from her).

Just wondered if you lot had any other thoughts, knowledge or opinions?

hugopal Spencer Brown based on the one time I saw him “warming up” for Diggers at Bedrock last Summer.

Dark horse name here, but Dj Nobu can play trance tinged stuff in a way that I would call progressive.

Any recommended sets worth listening to of the DJs mentioned above?

hugopal it was hardly “It rubs the lotion on its skin and plays Twilo Thunder at 133bpm” (copyright Millsy).

Point of in the weeds order - Twilo Thunder (and the Chain) are 137 (though 133 may be more appropriate for a Super Progressive gimp dungeon).

I’m with you in that I’m not a fan of the recent breeder remixes, but then they are more contemporary in that they removed the edge of the originals, part of which is bpm based.

There’s lots of ‘progressive trance’ at the moment but I wouldn’t be confident in stylistically it aiming at ‘peak prog’..

Flo Masse would be a good shout as a dj (and plays loads of 90s classics)

I’m just quoting Millsy’s amusing post - I’m aware it’s still too slow (hence my original comment pointing to Sasha & Diggers bashing stuff out at 138). As with Ed, I think SP would probably run for the hills if any DJs in a club he was attending actually went north of 130.

That isn’t really a hallmark of them being “contemporary” though - only the hallmark of them being made by those catering to the kind of dull sludge that lots of the old “prog” DJs are now playing. But there are still lots of “contemporary” DJs who play stuff that is closer to or edgier than the original (they just don’t typically call themselves “prog”).

I will try to check out all the suggestions in this thread.

I gave this way too much of a chance than I should have - too soft and fluffy, way too housey. Maxed out at 128bpm ffs. Give your ears a wash Alistair!

          Is the right answer!

Try some of Adam Pits sets. Some of his “Progier/Trancier” sets can veer to the dubby techno side.

I’d second Pits too, though it’s not really ‘golden’ prog IMO.

This is in a similar vein:

Wasily Actually forgot I did this! Wall to wall classics for sure. Can’t say I’ve heard any dj recently that plays close to the old prog’ because the music isn’t simply there now, unless you do what I did above…

Exactly. There are definite influences in todays tracks for sure. And attempts to keep the sound/genre alive which has unfortunately spawned new genres and the kind of shite you hear the likes of Cattaneo and Warren playing.
