I’m not going to spend ages digging this out - but i’m sort of surprised by now if more of us aren’t aware. Then again, I believed the news for a long time and I still do reference it.
When we look backwards, every war in recent decades has usually been said to be against one thing (WMD, terrorists, overthrowing dictators and so on), when it was later documented to be about another - i.e. stealing / gaining access / preventing opposition getting the precious resources (normally oil and gas, lately there are new minerals at play for electronics too). In overthrowing dictators we often have a say (or total control) over who replaces them - even if it doesn’t look like it is anything to do with us. I think this is what putin was also angry at, something like this happened in Ukraine and he lost any influence over it they used to have with the most recent politician (i don’t know, but it is believable)
Iraq and Syria were some of the most significant wars like this where in basic terms - the syrian pipelines into europe and other areas were being fought over between Russia, the West, and the country they were situated in - because whoever controls the oil gets stronger. Significantly stronger.
Look at all that cheddar (there are more resources than this but these are the main money makers)

In Iraq we claimed there was WMD (there was none) but oh look at that.. the west suddenly has control over all the oil fields and we make a fucking fortune in the next few decades.
UK / USA and some other countries can never allow opposition to control too much of it as when enough tax is paid to other countries from the sale of the resource for a decade or two, the profits from this can produce an extremely strong army / next generation air force like China now has and the insecure powers that be like USA/UK/France etc have yet another super power to content with.
Meanwhile we are told on media its for weapons of mass destruction (there are none) or to do a good deed by killing a dictator (and then we get their oil), or to “liberate people” and similar phrases we hear decade after decade on the TV / radio
Why do you think its on our TV/ radio dozens of times a day - they need buy in from us.
I was confused for years why USA, UK, Russia, France and a whole bunch of countries were fighting in Syria - why the fuck would you spend billions on a war there in particular? Because the oil the winner controls is worth fucking TRILLIONS. Sorry but you don’t spend billions on just overthrowing a dictator ‘cos we care about the syrians’! there has to be a significant reward for such a vast risk whilst people go homeless and in fuel poverty at home that a fractional amount of these expenses would fix - right?
War done this way is profitable.
I haven’t got all the research to hand but the above is simplified in laymens terms - if you go and do your digging you will find that and more. I’ve came across it before a few years ago and it is more widely known in financial circles where it was first taught to me in a finance seminar more coherently than this post. It made total sense and the person explaining it wouldn’t have a reason to lie from what I could tell
Leaders of all sides seem to have to gloss over the real truth internally to their public over their media to initiate enough support (anger) for our armies, who’s men and women belong to our families, to buy in and fight for something that is “just” and the right thing to do.
Many miliatary leaders/officers/sergeants etc come back and speak out with things like ’we killed so many, invading their country and tearing apart families home by home - and for what? we didn’t find a single WMD - something is very wrong’ - you wont have to go far to find these types of claims
The evidence is out there and apparently well documented - Seek and you will find with terms like “who controlled the oil after X war” and “how did the usa gain control of the oil in the middle east” or “how the west stole the oil from the middle east” and you wont be too many clicks from what you want.
Real independent journalism sometimes uncovers some gold - like Johnny Harris on Youtube.
