Last time I got paid to do something with little In the way of prior experience ended up as an absolute disaster. But luckily I wasn’t in front of a crowd of 30,000 and being streamed via tik tok.

So I got away with it, kept the £200 for the day, and I’ve never done brick laying since.

benson On the one hand you have loopy saying she should get a break because she is female and autistic, and on the other Francois K pointing out that any traces can still be beat matched no mater what the purported bpm showing on the CDJ is

I don’t see how her being female and autistic has any relevance to anything - she is a skilled music producer and has performed hundreds of gigs where she actually played her tracks live on stage using gear like Roland samplers and keyboards, plus FX pedals, and has produced in Garageband and Ableton, so it’s hardly as if she’s technically illiterate when it comes to music equipment or a novice at performing on stage.

She did appear to cut plenty of corners in trying to play a DJ gig though and hadn’t got her head around it before giving it a shot.

During the set she even said that she’d got someone else to sort out her music in Rekordbox for her and that she was trying to play the set using the sync function.

Now, I don’t own any CDJs and have never used Rekordbox in my life, but the most plausible explanation I read for what the issue she had probably was is that whoever imported her music in to Rekordbox had set the BPM range in the analysis settings too low/narrow eg 80-140 bpm. Thus the faster tracks she had (she said some were meant to be DnB or DnB influenced for example) were outside the given range and so ended up getting analysed and marked in Rekordbox at half their tempo, e.g. a DnB track would get labelled 80bpm instead of 160. Therefore when she then tried to play that track in her set at maybe 150bpm it was played at near double the speed.

Obviously the issue would have been irrelevant if she could just beatmatch, but who has the time to learn to do that?!

I was a tad disappointed to see her get in such a mess and approach a DJ set with such a lack of care, though there is also a part of me which wonders if the whole thing wasn’t done on purpose as a publicity stunt. She did also enter the stage on a giant robotic spider after all ffs.

But it would also be funny if it was her Tale of Us bf she’d got to sort out Rekordbox for her and he had genuinely accidentally caused her to be embarrassed in front of so many - if so then the conversation they would have had after that would have been a joy to witness.

I have no idea what happened here, but I’ll toss in my opinion anyways. If you take money to do something, you should probably know how to fucking do it. Especially if that something is to perform in front of a large crowd who paid way too much to be there.

Tough to sympathize with some muppet who couldn’t be bothered to learn a skill as simple as digital dj’ing. It’s not like she was trying to juggle three decks for 12 hours.

All in on Grimes, but will swerve her DJ set.

I’ve no idea who Grimes is?

        Hope that helps.

        Cheers.

All of this could have been avoided if she played wrecking ball prog on vinyl.

Is this not the responsibility of the promoters for making these bookings in the first place?

I’ve heard of producers getting booked for DJ sets and accepting the offers because the money was too good to turn down. One producer said they were watching Youtube ‘How to DJ’ tutorial videos on the train ride to the gig!

Smallman1 All of the worlds problems could be sorted with wrecking ball prog, Ed.

We’d have peace in the Middle East by just rocking up to the Gaza Strip with disc 2.

This. Digital dj-ing is so straightforward (all the dj’s on this board have mastered it!). To not have a handle on it / to not even bother to prepare speaks volumes.

Don’t know about the djing, but I’m a big fan of her live performances (on YouTube) and catching all the subtle variations while she’s running around and working all her gear on the fly.

Having skipped through this I actually feel sorry for her, she’s obviously having a reg from the start. A sound engineer briefly appears then fucks off again staring at his phone. A good engineer would of stayed up there and botched a workaround (ie give her a pair of cans and point at where the crossfader is.) No one there would of noticed or given a fuck)

Anyways the wheels start to compeltley fall off at around 30 mins in, but fair play to her she carries on and attempts to explain the problem with a bit of humility. Others would of just walked off stage at this point I reckon.

I doubt it - the bloomin’ Palestinians will probably try to argue that disc 1 is better.

                  I haven’t watched, or listened.

                  But it’s a total disgrace!

The worst thing about the whole debacle is a load of gatekeeping DJ’s on social media saying I told you so
