Rice is capable of dropping back alongside Stones when defending is needed, but I’d rather have the attacking players stay further forward. Then either of Rice or Gallacher can also get forward and the other stay when overloading the mid’ going forward.

4 at the back implies Maguire who is an absolute liability. There’s enough pace in the three I suggested staying back. No need for Walker and Shaw to get forward in that formation. Would rather have Gordon and Saka crossing balls than Walker and Shaw.

    I think a lot of managers suffer from what Gary Neville described was acutely going on with him when his Valencia got tonked 7-0 by Barcelona. They just would never admit for obvious reasons.

    Moyes springs to mind as he used to talk about ‘finding’ the winning formula. Like it was something he might stumble across, sooner rather than later.
