The point is there is no midfield - an exposed midfield of only 2 players is regularly going to have a tough time in the PL. Given Mainoo lacks a bit of pace and struggles to cover ground, which the system requires its midfielders to do to an almost miraculous degree, then it’s just not set-up for him to flourish. He’d look much better in a tighter 3 man midfield.
I’d far sooner sack Amorim at this rate and bring in a manager who favours a 433 - which would enable Mainoo to be more involved - than I would see Mainoo continue to be sacrificed at the altar of this mess Amorim insists on imposing on the team.
Iraola’s contract is up next summer - Utd should be sounding out his people already to see if he’d be open to joining during next month’s international break, assuming things don’t pick up significantly soon.
