There was some research done on the declining crowds in Scottish football, and one of the things that came out in a fans’ survey (that was subsequently totally ignored because the teams didn’t want their money pot being diluted by the inclusion of more teams) was fans get bored of watching the same small number of teams (12 with usually 1 up or down) every year e.g. if you’re a Motherwell fan, you can expect to play Celtic 4 times a season (and be whipped almost every time).
One might assume this would apply to a closed 12- or 16-team super league too.
