This is a reasonable question.
I always thought Alonso was a more important part of that team, and Gerrard spent a lot of games moping on the right wing (where Benitez had to shoehorn him into his system), spannering 30 yard Roy of the Rovers efforts over to just to spite Benitez’ tactics, and generally being a bellend. But of course, the occasional timely screamer and the fact that he’s from Huyton made him basically unsellable as far as most professional Liverpool fans were concerned.
I remember thinking I honestly didn’t care if he fucked off because I thought (rightly or wrongly) Benitez would probably buy 2-3 players with the cash that would actually make the team better. And I also shrugged my shoulders when he decided he was staying.
