All good points, but, answering the question of ‘who could do it before the world cup’, I reckon any of those four could do better job than Gareth will, with almost no time in the job.

Anyway, Gareth will probably be there for another decade or so, then get promoted to ‘FA / England Sporting Director’ or similar, so as to perpetuate the misery.

What a shit show that team has become. Would anyone be surprised if they didn’t get out of the group? A defeat to the Yanks, a draw with Wales (who will be well up for it, which may mask how crap they are too) and suddenly it could be over.

On a side note, I have never been so uninterested in a world Cup in my life. I will no doubt watch it, but after listening to a podcast that explored what it will be like for fans I’ve grown even more ambivalence about it. £15 a beer and only in certain times and at certain places. Can’t watch any games on TV as the local companies can’t afford the rights etc
