The Prem probably is harder overall than the World Cup - it’s the best quality league in world football and the players are all picked to be specialists in their roles and have lots of time to work with their managers and teammates on tactics etc.

With international teams you often get players shoehorned out of position due to countries having a lack of quality options available (and being unable to sign anyone from elsewhere), combined with limited training sessions with typically inferior managers and coaches.

Aside from tough nations like France and Spain, there’s a lot of dross with countries filled with lots of players unlikely to be good enough to be starters at PL level.

None of the 3 teams in Portugal’s group for instance - Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea - could even make an 11 comprised even solely of starters in Europe’s top 5 leagues; and they don’t even count as dross at WC level.

If there’s a players to watch from our side that you may not be familiar with, I suggest looking out for Tajon Buchanen, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David. David is likely to move to a better league and bigger team during the next transfer window. Stephen Estaquio has also been playing brilliantly lately for Porto and in Champions League and if his rise continues at the World Cup, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him move to a bigger team.

I wish we called up Scott Arfield of Rangers, but apparently there’s been some bad blood in between him and John Herdman. Like many other teams, three players were injured in the last few weeks that were regulars and were ruled out as a result.

He played a fair number of years in the Premier League as a starter with Blackburn, QPR and Cardiff. Admittedly, those sides weren’t top level performers in the Prem when they were up, but he has the experience against Premier League-level players. At 32,, those days are likely behind him but he’s done well for our national side.

When my national side has been uber shit for so long, it’s hard not to be excited. We didn’t even score the last time around in 1986 and lost all three matches. I don’t think the likelihood of that happening again is high based on the speed and talent we have now.

Very few teams have managed to shut down our speed and attacks. It’s our defending that concerns me the most against the likes of Croatia and Belgium. I did say way back that I think we’ll get out of our group and remain hopeful, but if we do so it will be by just scraping through.

By all accounts we should be ranked higher than the US and Mexico based upon our performance against them, but FIFA rankings don’t work that way.

The resulting play saved LAFC from losing the MLS Cup, despite the red card he received for doing so due to DOGSO. He broke his leg clean in half. He would have probably seen some playing time with us too.
