It’s a bit odd. About half my mates are Cheaty fans and of them about 50% are in families who have been season ticket holders for generations.
They’re the ones who you can see it still means a lot to because of a deeper connection, and to be honest I’m relatively pleased to see them so happy. Their take is to either ignore the fact they’re cheating or justify the good times against the shit ones - similar to the horsepunchers mentality now.
The other half are the infrequent flyers and most of them will admit to a level of uncertainty about how much it really means given the cheating.
The younger generation, say under 25’s never seem arsed, like it’s a foregone conclusion. May be a generational thing or that they’ve known little else.
One thing’s for certain, sportswashing works in football. Fans are almost childlike in their ‘success at any price’ mentality and will happily roll over an have their tummies tickled for dough.
Be interesting to see how it all plays out from a sporting perspective. Whether people start to drift from the game as the competition comes about who’s got the biggest dad.
Bracing myself for the deluge of United berks twerking for Qatari cash in the aftermath 😫
