Liverpool are league champions and won the European Cup the season before. By any objective standard, they’re the best (or one of the two best) teams in the country over the past few seasons. Inevitably people are going to get a bit excited about that, in a way that’s unpalatable to United fans.

Because the same guy who single handedly beat Olympiakos to stay in the competition refused to be beaten and took the final by the scruff of the neck. Did it in the FA cup final the following year. How many goals did he score against United and Everton over the years?

Hamann and Alonso were as integral to that fightback as Gerrard. In fact, Hamann was the best player on the pitch in my opinion.
