Not got any tips, but I went about 16 years ago and loved it there. Really want to go back one day.

rhouses Nishiki market in Kyoto is well worth a visit. Then go eat Unagi here:

They’ve been serving it since 1912.
A few temples are pretty spectacular in Kyoto: You’ve almost obliged to do the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine, but a few others are less known and more serene IMO like Tofuki-Ji.
If you get a chance drive 1 hr out of Tokyo to Hakone and enjoy the volcanic springs and scenery there- a lot of the hotels have onsens in the rooms and you can just chill out in there.
Food-wise in Tokyo I can highly recommend:

if you want to book any high end meals in Tokyo you tend to either know people who will book for you or use this app:

I’ve only ever gone to Hokkaido to ski so can’t really recommend any sightseeing.
Rhouses, which weight division of Sumo will you be entering?
Lived out there. Have been going pretty much every year for the past 25 years. Will retire and probably die out there.
Had 3 weeks in Hokkaido at the end of last year. June should be decent there weather wise. Honshu maybe not so much especially if rainy season has arrived. Apart from Sapporo, there aren’t any other cities worth staying in. Maybe Hakodate. Would consider a flight from Chitose outside Sapporo to Rishiri Island. Can also get a ferry from there to Rebun Island.
Kyoto will be very busy and have the added horrificness of Chinese tourists everywhere.
Henry have you done shiretoko in hokkaido? There’s a beautiful onsen spa in Kushiro, plan is to fly into closest airport to Shiretoko, road trip and some trails in that area for two days. And drive down to Kushiro.
Is Sapporo worth visiting? Wondering if we should just fly in there and explore and then drive to Kushiro for the onsen experience.
rhouses I was in Abashiri in December, which is fairly close. But snow ruled me getting on to Shiretoko.
It’s probably the remotest part of one of the main Islands. Pretty much untouched. You can fly from Tokyo to Memanbetsu really cheap using a JAL Explorer Pass (Google for the JAL) site. You could start your car journey from there and then once Shiretoko has been done head south to Daisetsuzan Park. Then visit and fly back from Sapporo.
Wasily I did a work sabbatical a few years ago and spent 3 months travelling around SE Asia with the missus. We spent a month in the Philippines and some of the islands there are amazing. The beach at Boracay is easily the best beach I’ve ever been too. Would love to head back that way one day.
I don’t know why people are contributing to this minger of a thread.
It’s just AN EXCUSE FOR RHOUSES’ VERBAL DIARRHEA.
Ooh look at me, I’m going to Japan.
Blah blah blah blah this was fire blah blah blah some shit about food blah blah Uniqlo even better in its home country blah blah I did a turd the size of an orca and these magical Japanese toilets flushed it first go!

I went there the year they shut it - it was disgusting. Absolutely gutted as was expecting what you’d described.
Millsy I’m actually looking forward to his travelogue
I’m sure his travel log will be of ample size.
