How about a Tim Burgess like listening party for the prog ones starting with Nick Warren? Tin hat at the ready!
Listening to and reviewing all 1997's Essential Mixes
If I never listened to another Nick Warren set in my life I’d absolutely be ok.
If he does occasionally scan this board, I’m sure he feels the same way about your restaurant posts.
An absolute hall of famer that thread Dave!
bosstrabs 02-09 Scott Hardkiss (RIP)
A wonderful snapshot of its time, clearly a one-take mix with no tidying-up in the editing, it’s genuinely evocative of a main room at probably 3am-5am back in the day. Pure shivers as The Reese Project - Direct-Me (Sasha’s 3am Drop Mix) is dropped. Drifts into fondue territory soon after with Rocket Man into Not Over Yet and then plain weird Apocalypse Now territory with the Morrison-sampling ‘Stoned’. It’s a really difficult mix to give a simple mark to, so out of respect it I’ll say the highs outweigh the lows and give it 7.5/10.
I’m biased on this one, as I think it’s one of the best mixes ever put together, and have listened to it endlessly for the last twenty odd years. The Reese Project… very rare to find a track with that level of brooding tension.
Did jonathan bond not post up the entire year review in one fell swoop? Dave seems to be listening to one mix a week here. No point rushing an artist at his work, i suppose…
Felt like Jonnattan really committed to it whereas Dave is just phoning this one in big time.

It’s a masterpiece. Dave slowly disintegrating in front of our very eyes. A self proclaimed messageboard behemoth coming apart at the seams, post by post.
We don’t want to look, but can’t help it.
There’s no graceful way out, so he has to soldier on, knowing his own MBB moment is inevitable.
TLDR; reg
Dave is the message boards answer to Steve Beaton.
You see the occasional piece of genius but he’s absolutely shot to bits the rest of the time.
Lads, lads, lads, worry ye not.
This will be heading into Thread of the Year territory by the time I’ve finished.

Rhouses stood facing the toilet, admiring his output. A perfectly tube-like, curled, fat conger eel of a turd lay in the pan. That consistency will have been down to the three tins of Campbell’s Meatball Soup he had yesterday. Did it glitter? Was that just his imagination? Oh yes, that will have been the gold leaf-flecked Godiva luxury chocolate ice cream cone he had at the mall the previous evening. As he sauntered out of the palatial bog, he passed the flushing assistant on her way in. “Behold a master at work!” he proudly said. That reminded him, he had picked up that 1997 Essential Mix compilation from Abdul’s Tape Exchange and still hadn’t worked his way through it. Masters at Work were up next.
He put the tape in the Sanyo and pressed play, before flopping on the sofa to work his way through a box of Morrison’s Cheese Curls. Occasionally, his cheese dust covered fingers picked at his long toenails. Masters at Work’s signature blend of house, Latin rhythms, jazz, and soul sputtered through the cassette player.
Just then his missus burst in, angry as fuck:
“Subah se sofa tod rahe ho! Kya tumhaari naukri sirf remote control chalane ki hai?!”
“Ab muh band karo aur utho! Fridge ke neeche ka paani pochhna hai, aur haan, bartan bhi tum hi dhologe aaj. Main tumhaari naukrani nahi hoon, samjhe?!” he mumbled in response.
Picking up his fetid socks from the floor, she continued, “Aur yeh kya hai?! Har jagah apni chappal, kapde, aur socks chhode rehte ho… tum ghar ke husband ho ya tornado?!”
Just then, The Knowledge’s Until The Day gave way to Nu Yorican’s delightful It’s Alright.
Rhouses sat up, with some effort, and beckoned his wife over with a cheese-stained finger. “Remember Method Man? GU13? This could be our new soundtrack” His other hand rubbed his corpulent belly.
She melted more quickly than his spangly Godiva ice cream had done all over his Uniqlo bag in the late afternoon Delhi sun. Before the mix was out, they were a mess of conjoined limbs on the sofa. Rhouses remembered that Abdul’s Tape Exchange wasn’t so bad after all and he wouldn’t vote BJP next time.
