Decent track that šŸ‘šŸ¼

Mad_Cyril I wonder how much ā€˜Mav’ got for that percussion gig each week? Do you think any of the Cream clientele actually noticed it? Always struck me as an odd mention on a flyer.

gcw I don’t really remember the live percussion, but that’s probably because I was absolutely off my nut every time I went to Cream.

What’s really shocking, looking back, was the 9pm-3am times, I mean who wants to get on the dancefloor before 11 really?

Although I seem to remember Cream and Godskitchen went on till 4 (and occasionally 6/7) by the time I was going fairly regularly. More permissive licensing?

Yes, that was a weird little phase wasn’t it. I blame Shovell from M People.

    gcw
Early 90’s was Sudha & Shovell if I remember right. Definitely remember them being there. They didn’t play constantly through the night, just kind of interjected every now and then.

Were dece, but not essential, very much an ā€˜of the time’ type thing.

Gutted I never made it to Cream. How big was the club in terms of physical size? Was the courtyard actually outside?

Would have loved to have gone to Cream in it’s pomp.

Not only would I have seen Oakey tear the Courtyard up I would have absolutely ledged it with me old mucka Dave too.

I remember UK Midlands often had someone banging away the bongos during the night. It was generally shit, and they would always carry on playing after the sound had been switched off and lights were on. That seemed to the their 2 mins of fame during the night as people carried on dancing to some bongos. Tbf it was also a good way to get people out the venue as it was horrific to listen to!

        • Dan replied to this.

Organic house has put them out of business for good.

I cannot tell you dimensions, although I think there was a plan (architects’ blueprint) in the sleeve of Cream Live 2 (The White Album) IIRC. I think the capacity of the whole club was about 3500. Bear in mind that The Courtyard wasn’t always open, it was often just the Main Room and The Annexe. Each room was pretty big, although the main room seemed massive. The Annexe probably had a big capacity but was like a long and thin shed with a DJ booth at the far end.

I probably went about 15 times and although I was ā€˜there’ for Oakenfold in the Courtyard, it was usually just rammo so I fucked it off most times tbh and went to The Annexe which usually had someone interesting on. The Courtyard was a sweaty marquee basically, as I recall, you couldn’t budge in there and it was full of Oakey devotees.

I actually went to GodsKitchen @The Sanctuary many more times than I went to Cream, basically every other weekend for my three years at uni (usually interspersed with other Brummie nights like Atomic Jam, MOS Bar or the admittedly awful Bakers).

bosstrabs I went to Atomic Jam a few times when at uni too. Loved those nights the Q club

RichM The Que Club was massive too.

Referencing Bakers, if you were around there at that time, it was a weird club that usually had cheesier nights but they did have one good night (think it may have been Thursdays) where Scott Bond was resident and they usually had a decent guest. I remember being able to sit down and get a meal in there, and really the idea of having a SpagBol at 11pm (just before you double-dropped and evacuated it all in a door-less shitter) was surprisingly, weirdly appealing (and the Bolognese sauce was good).

Blessed relief šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø as Dave ejected molten hot Dolmio during his E-CACK.

ā€œLads, listen up, I like the japes and banter as well as any of you, but If i see anyone downing shots, or sniffling lines, before we’ve all fuelled up on our carb heavy pre-rave health and safety dinner, I’ll be raging with you!ā€
