Listening to and reviewing all 1997's Essential Mixes
This is pure poetry!
Decent track that
Although I seem to remember Cream and Godskitchen went on till 4 (and occasionally 6/7) by the time I was going fairly regularly. More permissive licensing?
Yes, that was a weird little phase wasn’t it. I blame Shovell from M People.
Gutted I never made it to Cream. How big was the club in terms of physical size? Was the courtyard actually outside?
Would have loved to have gone to Cream in it’s pomp.
Not only would I have seen Oakey tear the Courtyard up I would have absolutely ledged it with me old mucka Dave too.
I remember UK Midlands often had someone banging away the bongos during the night. It was generally shit, and they would always carry on playing after the sound had been switched off and lights were on. That seemed to the their 2 mins of fame during the night as people carried on dancing to some bongos. Tbf it was also a good way to get people out the venue as it was horrific to listen to!
Organic house has put them out of business for good.

mono-stereo Gutted I never made it to Cream. How big was the club in terms of physical size? Was the courtyard actually outside?
I cannot tell you dimensions, although I think there was a plan (architects’ blueprint) in the sleeve of Cream Live 2 (The White Album) IIRC. I think the capacity of the whole club was about 3500. Bear in mind that The Courtyard wasn’t always open, it was often just the Main Room and The Annexe. Each room was pretty big, although the main room seemed massive. The Annexe probably had a big capacity but was like a long and thin shed with a DJ booth at the far end.
I probably went about 15 times and although I was ‘there’ for Oakenfold in the Courtyard, it was usually just rammo so I fucked it off most times tbh and went to The Annexe which usually had someone interesting on. The Courtyard was a sweaty marquee basically, as I recall, you couldn’t budge in there and it was full of Oakey devotees.
