The “Unite the Kingdom” slogan is pure populism echoing the slogans of the Brexit loons like “Take back control”.
To blame the deterioration of this country, falling living standards, crumbling public services on asylum seekers is pure scapegoating. There is no comparison when you stack it up against tax avoidance, underinvestment in services, housing shortages, welfare cuts, wealth inequality.
Asylum/immigration is a small fraction of total public expenditure. The Home Office’s £5-6 billion on asylum compared to a total UK government expenditure of hundreds of billions (in the region of £1,100-1,400 billion depending on what you include), means that it is far from being the main driver of deficits or public service shortfalls.
