Canada is in a group with Switzerland, Qatar and whoever wins the UEFA Playoff in between Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy and Wales.
Realistically-speaking, we should get out of the group. It’s likely that Italy get out of that playoff, but they’re not exactly star-studded. We’ve already beaten Wales in Wales. Northern Ireland and Bosnia are definitely not better teams than we are. Switzerland is a beatable team. With the new format, even if we don’t place top two in the group the next eight best teams go through. Realistically, I think it’s possible. What will be interesting to see if how much the country gets behind the whole event considering there’s only the two sites in Vancouver and Toronto.
I’m more pissed that FIFA has gone with dynamic pricing. Tickets are selling for several grand. I wanted to be able to take my son and see Canada play in a home World Cup. We’ve already seen Canada play during the qualifying rounds in the lead-up to the last World Cup when they played Panama. We both got to watch Phonsie Davies score a cracking goal. I guess we’ll head down to the fan zone instead.
Dynamic pricing didn’t work for the Club World Cup and there were loads of empty seats in stadiums. I don’t see it working for the 2026 World Cup either. I expect to see a lot of empty seats. People just flat out can’t afford to attend. I offered to volunteer for it but haven’t heard anything back yet.
There’s little doubt that FIFA as an organization are thieving and corrupt cunts, but when you claim to be promoting the game throughout the world and charge $1,500 CAD for a basic ticket in the bleeders, that’s taking the piss.
