Canada is ranked 27th in the world according to FIFA’s rankings. We have true world class starts on our team playing for some of the best clubs in Europe. I realize some people argue FIFA rankings rely too much upon historical wins, but they’ve had one of the fastest rising rankings in the past few years.
Inversely, the rankings of the countries we’re going to play (and/or may play from the playoff):
Bosnia - 71
Italy - 12
Northern Ireland - 69
Qatar - 51
Switzerland - 17
Wales - 32
By all accounts Italy should get through the playoff, but their qualifying hasn’t exactly been stellar. Do I think they’re a better side than Canada? Absolutely. However, if Italy don’t get through the playoff that makes a top two placement VERY achievable and puts us through.
Interestingly, if we get out of the group that means we continue to play in Canada - which bodes even better for us.
My expectation and the team’s expectation is that they get out of the group. I don’t believe it’s an unrealistic goal.
As an aside, what are the chances of your Oilers shitting the bed again this year? 😉
