SM001 Lol! Fair. They did list Satoshi Tomiie – Virus and if the list is from 2000 to 2025 they had a fairly small window to pick out any decent prog. 😅
Even still, who the feck is picking Satoshi Tomiie ‘Virus’ as their number 1 prog tune of the early 00s?!… even with the increasingly slim pickings I’d be surprised if it would have even made anyone on here’s wider top 10s.
smokindan The Best Electronic Tracks of 2000-25 has landed.
Such lists by music publications are always prone to pretentiousness, and journalists trying to slip in niche personal favourites which objectively shouldn’t be there ahead of other tracks, but even with that said three-quarters of the list is a joke. There’s some of it which also surely has to be trolling/rage-bait.
In line with all the above, for instance, who is seriously picking ‘Que Belle Epoque’ as even their number 1 Villalobos track, ahead of the likes of ‘Dexter’, ‘Easy Lee’, ‘Fizheuer Zieheuer’ etc.? Let alone sticking it as the 3rd best electronic music track of this Century so far?… Same goes for things like selecting ‘XR2’ (huh?) from MIA ahead of eg ‘Bucky Done Gun’, ‘Paper Planes’, ‘Bamboo Banga’ etc. , and taking ‘South London Boroughs’ out of Burial’s catalogue.
On the techno side of things, for starters, ‘Stranger to Stability’ is somehow relegated to merely a “Further Selections” behind Ancient Methods ‘Knights & Bishops’. Also, Floorplan ‘Never Grow Old’ is entirely missing. Meanwhile, even though I like Donato Dozzy, what is a random ambient track of his which basically no one has ever heard of doing on there, let alone at number 12?
Meanwhile, if you’re going to include synth pop like Robyn ‘Dancing On My Own’ (a deserving selection, mind), and Jack U + Justin Bieber (understandable for its influence, but dodgy), then why is nothing by Grimes on there? You’ve also got an Olof Dreijer track (great track though it is), but left off The Knife ‘Heartbeats’ - which is arguably a top 100 all-time song of any genre, let alone just electronic music of this Century. The only positive surprise is that they’ve gritted their teeth and acknowledged that Crystal Castles were indeed a thing (even if maybe they’ve partly acknowledged them to try and tarnish them). Perhaps for personal reasons they’ve entirely ignored Omar S..
