Used to get my Trumpet off a bloke in there.
Eric Morillo
The Ship was a hole prior to getting done up circa ’91. Pub closest to our school so bit of a traditional haunt. The place had a porta cabin in the car part during the renovation called the lifeboat. Story was in The Sun. They were simpler times back then…….lol
I go back from time to time. Take a trip down memory lane but majority of the place has changed so much from the early 90’s apart from The Ship and its menu. Its even still got the Ark Royal burger as an option…..suppose if it ain’t broken don’t fix it.
A lot of mates went to Uni and just gravitated back to Chelmsford and never left, which I found a bit odd. I couldn’t wait to get out TBH but its a different beast now. Just like any other commuter town TBH.
IndustryStandard The Ship was a hole prior to getting done up circa ’91.
Makes me think of this place on the coast here on Northern California. It was just colloquially known as the loser bar. Then these surfer dudes took it over and did a remodel; place looks great. But it’s still frequented by the same losers. Nothing really changed.
Unbroken1 …interesting alternative take on comments from certain quarters:

Chloe and I are mates as well. Known her since her days posting on the old GU Board, met her in person, frequently chat and interact, etc. She recently lost her son (who was the same age as my son) and has had a really rough go of things over the past few years as a result, so she’s been more tense than usual.
She isn’t the type of person who backs down from her opinions - of which are strong and many surrounding issues like animal rights and social justice. I forget what the source of the argument was that Chloe and Mr. C got into originally, but Richard didn’t fair so well with some of the shit he was saying and she was rightfully pretty offended, called him out on it and then he got a bit bitter and called her a cunt.
At the end of the day, it was two people arguing on the Internet and it went sour pretty quickly. I don’t think Mr. C was intentionally misogynistic, but intent or not doesn’t always equate to the crime being committed.
The whole #metoo and #blacklivesmatter movements have changed the parameters within which we as a society operate. Whether or not that’s good or not (I believe it’s largely good) remains to be seen.

hugopal Mr C probably shouldn’t have used the C word, but “DJ Chloe Harris” does sound like an utter loon of a leftist:
"The altercation began on June 20 when Harris (aka Raica) accused West of being a racist. As Harris describes it, West wrote a Facebook post asking for more funding for the UK police. She replied, “Fuck the police” mainly in jest, but also with a degree of seriousness. “Then he said only uneducated people or wannabe bad boys say ‘fuck the police,’ which seemed like dog-whistle racism to me,” Harris says in an email interview. “So I told him so and said that the police are murdering racism scum and anyone who supports them is, too. Then he said he has a cousin in the police and I’m a stupid vile cunt, and it all kicked off from there.”
I wouldn’t call her loony in the slightest. She holds valid opinions - many of which I agree upon and others I very much disagree with. I’ve had debates with her about my not being vegan (she and her family are) and animal rights/welfare where we are not in agreement, but I’ve kept it civil and withheld from name calling. I’ve also had it out with her regarding her views on ALL of the police, but again I didn’t resort to calling her names. I would still consider us quite good mates, but people should be able to disagree with each other respectfully and that’s what was lacking in that conversation.
Chloe really is lovely and had a former career opening up for Diggers all over the place. I might be mistaken, but I believe she’s the only female DJ to have ever OPENED for Digweed at a Bedrock night. She was a true champion of the prog house sound for years and got sick of being treated like she had to be pretty all the time and behave a certain way because she was female - which is an accurate summation of women and they way they’re treated in the music industry even to this day.
Millsy Ah yes. Was going out with Cul. Was always sound in my book.
Mark and Chloe are now married with two (formerly three ) kids living in Seattle.

Mad_Cyril No
Did a decent Essential Mix apparently
I reckon if you ask Mick Wilson ‘is prog racist’ he’d probably answer that question quite differently. He wrote a pretty good article in DJ Mag about the electronic music scene about this exact topic rather recently (he’s the tech editor for DJ Mag).

As for Morillo himself… I don’t claim to be anyone known in electronic music, but I did have a brief flash in the pan period of relative success in the music industry here in Canada and the US, and it was a pretty open secret that he was complete scum around women. He hit on a female friend of mine (more like openly groped her) so hard at a gig we were at in Toronto that she ran away crying and couldn’t get away fast enough.
I can understand people wanting to eulogize his music and separate him from the person he was, but it can get pretty blurry where people draw the line in between the person’s art (which can be amazing) and the ‘artist’ being a piece of shit. I love what Betoko produces musically, but he absolutely battered the shit out of a woman I knew quite well who was his fiance and was convicted for the crime. Michael Jackson has had multiple accusations thrown at him about abusing children, yet I won’t deny I love his music.
That’s an aspect of things I can understand the conundrum people face when trying to come to terms when someone who has died that has influenced them greatly turns out was a real piece of shit human being. What I DO NOT understand is when people start saying shit like, ‘I only ever knew Eric to be nice to me and a gracious host, blah, blah, blah’ and try to downplay the rather rampant accusations and known open secrets about someone’s poor behaviour - which has happened way too much with Morillo from the all male DJ/producer types who eulogized him after his death. That made me pretty sick.
Lastly, I’m not sure if it has been mentioned or not but the woman who brought charges against Eric is Roger Sanchez’s wife. Can you imagine if you were Roger Sanchez and your wife stays at one of your best mates house in a spare room, only to find out the day after your best mate raped her? I’d fucking kill the guy! Not only is it wrong because you know, rape, but that just shatters every bro code rule ever written. That’s downright fucking scum right there.
loopdokter I don’t claim to be anyone known in electronic music
Don’t do yourself down Loopy, you’ve got serious chops chief.
Lived a prog life most on here could only dream of.
loopdokter Roger Sanchez’s wife. Really?
If this weapon isn’t an alias, I will take Eddie out on a date…
…Loopy has this uncanny ability to recap in long-form everything already said in a thread (including the details people opted not to include), every article linked, every quote given, every conclusion drawn, a selection of already widely-known anecdotes, seasoned with a fine sprinkling of ‘industry’ tittle-tattle all while clueing us in on who his great mates are and the complex history they’ve shared.
Keep on keeping-on Loopstick!
Legendary
What an opening line…
Get the ticket collection money going again…
SMALLMAN YOU CAN HAVE MY 20 QUID BACK!
Another yarn from our man in the field.
Loppy will never really retire from prog. It needs him.
WTF???
Roger Sanchez killed Eric Morillo!!!
Quite enjoyed the diversion into Essex discussion here.
Question for the Essex lads: Do more sentient Essex types like you realise it’s probably the UK county that is most full of bellends, in pretty much everyone’s experience, or are you Proud Essex Lads ™?
