I’m off to Hawksmoor for a late lunch tmrw, which should be nice. Followed by Greg Davies at Royal Albert Hall.

Even better would be if someone sent you to North China in a Sea Container.

Smallman1 I just mean so I could meet my ol’ mucker Rich and we could have a night out in Beijing.

Smallman1 A combination of “A bastion of fine French food” and being at The Ritz sounds fucking awful.

Was there recently, it was absolutely sensational.

Smallman1 they are about 25 years out of date with that choice as winner.

Does a nice afternoon tea tbf

Decent crackers too

A strange but true fact about The Ritz.

Margaret Thatcher died there!

Smallman1

Ed heading to three uncles?

Defo a euphemism.

Smallman1 the one in the city is very average. Hope the Brixton one is better

Went to hawksmoor this afternoon and absolutely solid. Always enjoyed their steaks there but today did their 15th birthday 2 course menu for £28. Can’t think of a better deal in London if you want a good value steak with some decent wine. We only spent £70 a head.

Dan that included a negroni to start, a couple of glasses of wine each and the 2 courses, plus service. Seems decent for a nice steak and somewhere to enjoy a couple of hours in the afternoon

Smallman1 Going to be heading here next week Dave -

    Hold tight for feedback!

The dishes are great, and it looks like the menu from a small cafe that you would find in a food court basement of a shopping mall all over China (which is not a bad thing - like Singapore’s hawker places, these are sometimes the best places to eat).

What’s interesting is this has become hipsterised, and unfortunately when Asian food goes hipster, the prices of simple dishes usually become fairly outrageous (as here) and the authenticity is lost (hope this isn’t the case) in favour of Instagrammable presentation and a bland Sunday supplement set of flavours.

I would eat here if in London, gladly - at least to try it.

hugopal Dave, what do your eyes make of this place?

Looks decent, same principle, you find these beef noodle restaurants in the basement of any shopping centre in Beijing, although this is Lanzhou/Gansu style rather than Cantonese.

Probably have that very dish once or twice a month. The restaurants usually have bowls of chilli oil and chopped scallion so you can add extra, and obviously loads of that gets dumped in.

25 rumbas for a bowl of that here, which is about 3 Euro. Excellent if done properly and they have someone hand-pulling the noodles (MAD CYRIL’S EUPHEMISM KLAXON) in house.
