  • Whatever happened to Chris & James?

alistair Huge track when dropped at the right moment. John Aquaviva played it down in Cork at Sir Henrys right about the time everyone in the place came up on their doves. Unbelievable scenes.

I went to one of those Clockwork Orange nights at Hollywood’s on a bank holiday Sunday, was honestly one of the best nights I’ve ever had. Marc Aurebach played iirc

nicksneddon some of them were pretty mental . Remember trying to get in the boot of a Maestro which was going to some after hours thing. Luckily me mate pulled me out as I’d only met them in the burger van line .

ThaT Suzzi Carr track was an absolute beast that summer

I remember queuing for one bank holiday Sunday after being at dave morales at the Camden palace the night before. I was in a right pickle and the queue was absolutely massive. never seen a club as rammed that night and it was near enough impossible to move but was one of the best nights out we had

Interesting re: Danny Rampling and his dj’ing. I am a big fan of his sets from 88-94. As much as I love clubbing and still went intermittently, I miss those eclectic sets where you were just as likely to hear house, trance and techno in the same set. The only criteria was whether it was a good record or not.

…hmm, whenever I heard him play in the early/mid-90’s I always thought it was v confused. After he discovered Goa trance his sets were all over the place, starting with MAW’ish house and often ending with boshing trance. I’m all for eclecticism but in a period when it was rare that sets were longer than 90 minutes it seemed a bit of a mess.

Unbroken1 Agreed re 90 min sets. Tenaglia used to regularly go through the genres which is why I went out of my way to see him. His GU’s are prime examples.

He comes across as a bit off in that interview, either against James his ex-dj partner or other djs. Am i the only picking that up?

-si- you’re not the only one. He does come across as a bit chippy. The honest answer is the high profile work dried up so there was no point in carrying on. Presumably didn’t fancy being low down the pecking order at a Clockwork Orange reunion in Es Paradis or Chelmsford race course

          alistair

A one hour set every reunion, sandwiched between Graham gold and Jason bye.

            My mate booked Graham Gold.

20 people turned up. Including the staff.

Completely forgot they remixed spirits don’t bring me down

              • Dan replied to this.

-si- 😄 Just above Danny Clockwork and Andy Manston. Bye is great at Mambo though. Class act

Dan I have unfortunately seen Graham gold on four occasions. All absolutely shocking. Like a shit judge jules and that is a bad level to start with

                • Dan replied to this.

Am good mates with Dave Lambert of Peach fame.

Being a Spurs fan aside, he’s sound.

                  Dreadful KLANG I know.

Also seen Dave DJ a few times at oscars and club art and he is certainly better the Graham. Was he not the A&R man behind positiva

Yep, worked at Strictly Rhythm and tonnes of others too.

Christian Can’t be as good as the Roach Motel Dub? Great tune that.

Dan never heard that version before. I agree it’s better than chris&james version

Graham Bold got buggered by HMRC i read. Loads of cash in hand jobs throughout the glory days never declared. HMRC had a special unit to focus on DJs and Bold was one of the unlucky ones. So skint he hoofed over to Thailand to continue banging out Goa Trance. Looks like he’s on the roids too

That was a feast for the eyes and ears…..from the scary screen placeholder, camp gold microphone to Mr Gold shirt off banging out Nukleaz back cat for 18hours……

Looking forward to the lockdown productions……

                      He looks carbon dated.

That’s what Ed will look like in 15 years.

Dan Graham is a good mate of mine. I’ve known him since 1999. He’s absolutely sound and his years as a DJ pre-date most of us even having been born - including myself.

He got a lot of flack for playing cheese, but some of that was due to pressure where he was being booked and also because he was on the radio, so there were certain expectations set upon him from promoters and punters alike. His heart has always been well and truly into the progressive trance/progressive house sounds. The stuff he’s playing and producing now is absolutely wicked!

He used to hammer my track ‘The Fear’ on Kiss when he had his show for about three months, so that obviously makes me even more loyal to him.

He’s also crazy fit for his age (66), absolutely hilarious, comes up to my waist and could out-cane any of us - so there’s that too. He’s a lovely chap whose DJ career spans five decades. He was more instrumental in the rise of house music in the UK than he gets credit for. Pete Tong was dreaming of playing records when Graham was actually doing it. Respect where respect is due!

Wow…you know him? Small world eh?

I’ve endured loads of his sets at Peach and also Checkpoint Charlie in Reading. Nothing to write home about.

As for Chris and James…. James Bradley is still in the game doing stuff under his own name, but not super active. I had a conversation with him a while back about ‘the good old days’ and he said he doesn’t remember much (haha) and is pretty focused on his kids, while working a full time job. I think he was briefly on the Bedrock Board if I’m not mistaken.

James Wiltshire is still VERY active and does work as a sound designer making synth patches, loops, etc. He also produces as Freemasons and was one half of Phats & Small. In addition he does tonnes of production/audio engineering based spots on the YouTubes. He’s quite knowledgeable and worth checking out if you are into electronic music audio production.

No idea what Chris Day is up to because I don’t know him, but if it’s the right one (which it seems to be), Facebook suggests to me that he works for the Bournemouth council in some shape or form.

                          /obsessive trainspottery

Dan Wow…you know him? Small world eh?

I’ve endured loads of his sets at Peach and also Checkpoint Charlie in Reading. Nothing to write home about.

Peach was definitely the cheesier side of Graham (that made him quite a bit of money at the time), but again he is one of the few DJs that I know who can go out and play a banging more commercial set and then go somewhere else the exact same night and play the most underground and amazing music you’ve never heard. Few are able to do that.

His dance music knowledge is rarely paralleled. He’s a living legend in my books!

Dan have to agree. Spent the majority of the mid 90s listening to Gold at Peach, Leisure Lounge and Camden Palace. Kiss, one off gigs, he was everywhere in the UK. Problem is his sound never really moved on into the noughties . Nice guy , spoke with him many times after gigs but musically not my thing anymore .

Xhrist Jay you just can’t help yourself can you

interesting interview piece. Had a few messy nights at the Rhumba Club back in the day - several Club 4 Life nights. I know James Bradley vaguely -very nice bloke who loves his golf and fishing these days.

Always liked this C & J job on Chris Rea …

re-read the interview and completely forgot about the luvdup twins. how did they managed to get away with sending in radom replacments. remember it was initially mark and adrian luvdup and they were warming up all over the north. However it was very hit and miss if you actually got them or had they sent colin and neil luvdup

what was that Stress compliation from the mid 90’s? Was excellent and had a bunch of these key records. Also contained a great Brothers In Rhythm remix of Eurythymics Here comes the rain? Also had Daphne Change which is an absolute killer track
