Started The Sopranos with the missus who never saw it as she’s not a big “mafia” fan, we’re into series 3 and its blowing her socks off. I’ve realised my memory mixed up episodes and series and how good Livia was. It gets better with every episode, it really does. I know there’s a debate about the best ever and all that but I honestly can’t recall a series that does that. Its the benchmark. Ralphie just got eased into it like a Digweed transition and the first thing the missus said was “Who’s this evil looking bastard?”. So much good stuff to look forward to.

Yeah it’s still top drawer television. I rank The Wire ahead of it but that’s just a personal choice, no wrong answer.

But some of the episodes….wow is the pacing and plot development slow by today’s standards. Really noticeable when I did a rewatch over lockdown. And I don’t mean that as a criticism. I actually preferred it.

Six Feet Under (boss ending)
The Shield (boss ending)
Breaking Bad (just excellent)
The Leftovers (final season is great and makes up for a questionable S.2)
Friday Night Lights (just very well done)
The Wire (a let down, all of S.5 is - even if it’s still excellent by regular TV standards)
The Sopranos (still have mixed feelings about the last scene; a letdown like The Wire given its pedigree)
The Americans (pretty good)
Deadwood (never had a chance unless you count that movie which was….okay)
Dexter (what a disgrace)

I’m ok with the ending as I’ve probably mentioned already deep down in this thread somewhere. Tony became such an icon that it literally became impossible to write it one way or the other, so difficult. That’s why I’m ok with it, I thought it was fitting to leave it like that and you could interpret it whatever way you wanted depended on your love of the character or how the storyline developed in those final few episodes. All the whinging was over the top imo.

i maintain the last season of the sopranos was nothing but a cash grab with lazy writing. iconic up to that point, with a massive letdown. and it’s the entire last season, not just the last episode, where the character motivations are totally inconsistent.

as mentioned above, see six feet under for how to end a show. that’s a quality last season and the best finale ever.

Interested to know what you mean by this (not in a condescending Hugo way) as I read an interview with Chase years ago that mentioned the nature of the Colombo and Bonanno wars of the 70s and 80s where allegiances flip flopped almost daily given the treacherous nature of “the life”, makes sense. Chase felt the writing up to that point was as realistic as possible. I suppose I’ll get there on the current run and see if it works out the same for me, I remember it being good the last time.
