Warfare (2025) 7/10:
Saw this at the Electric this evening. Alex Garlands ‘writes’ and directs with the help of ex-vet Ray Mendoza a real life event in Ramadi from the Iraq war circa 2006. Feels a lot like a slightly lower budget version of Black Hawk Down, but the building of tension is good and the fighting to me at least seems realistic. I think Garland wrote this movie as an honorarium to those who fought in this battle and as such it lacks any plot or significant character development, but maybe this in itself is the message. It’s gritty and bleak and good on a big screen.
