Dubman Christian I’ve been very fortunate to spend some time with a few Sherpas. One of them had summited Everest a few times but then on an expedition summit attempt on Makalu he lost one of his gloves and got severe frostbite and lost a few fingers. He’s now a trekking guide but is so humble and still enjoys working in the mountains.
Christian Dubman they do an amazing job for very little money. It’s unbelievable how some of them get treated in this film by the “clients”
Along_the_Wire Dubman it’s grim work, I don’t think they enjoy it. I gave our guys massive tips when we did the Inca Trail.
Millsy Along_the_Wire as you smashed back the vino and got carried everywhere on a bamboo throne no doubt. Your tips meant nothing.
Dubman Along_the_Wire I think some like it especially the ones that work for a tour operator as they get paid fairly well plus tips at the end and all there food and accommodation is paid for plus there’s strict rules on the amount of weight they can. It’s the other porters that carry all the supplies up to the guest houses a villages in the mountains that get a bad deal as they get paid just for the load they carry so they have to pay for their own food & accommodation. The things I’ve seen people carry is incredible from big sheets of corrugated metal, steel beams. I saw one guy carrying 4 mattresses strapped to his back.
Smallman1 Did enjoy Macchu Picchu I must say. You can have a decent night out in Cusco too. This is Ed ‘Alan Whicker’ Smallman signing out.
Smallman1 Dubman I saw one guy carrying 4 mattresses strapped to his back. Handy for the lie down after tbf.
Christian Imagine treking all the way to base camp and this cunt turns up with Sherpas carrying his decks
Jules72 Have read loads of books on Mountaineering (Into Thin Air, Touching the Void etc)….and have marvelled at the dizzying feats of the climbing feats of a colleague who works out of Geneva…. but think i’ll stick to armchair mountaineering. I totally get why people do it though - incredible pastime.
Mad_Cyril Jules72 Feel similar about Polar exploration. Some great books, the books are close enough for me thanks!!
Along_the_Wire Jules72 It’s brilliant and properly, properly hard. I’m too much of a bedwetter to do anything hard mind outside of climbing walls.
