Close Encounters of the Third Kind
I thought we had already done this in here, but I can’t find it and as our search is about as useful as a rubber crutch, we’ll just have another go at it.
The epitome of a Spielberg ‘thinker’, low on action, big on questions, and beautifully shot; some of the cinematography and framing is power. The effects are obviously dated but still look gorgeous due to the way everything is lit. Dreyfuss is brilliant as an everyman losing his mind, and everyone else does a good turn too. Unfortunately it’s all undermined by the fact that the story is essentially one of a middle aged man fucking off and leaving his wife and three to go trolling off around the galaxy with some aliens who showed up two minutes ago. He needs his head seeing to. Teri Garr is a bit of a sort.
