Babylon (2022). Total mess, but I loved it. It was so earnest for it’s love for movies, even if it was a three hour film with no plot.

Twister (1996). Missed this one in the 90s, watched it now because The Rewatchables are doing it on the podcast next week. 90s special effects movies were pretty fun, because they tried to have a story or characters in them. This one didn’t really have much of a story, but had Philip Seymor Hoffman being Philip Seymor Hoffman (I call it the suck zone), and Cary Elwes hamming it up quite nicely, as the villain who was the villain because he had better funding, and nicer cars.

The CGI is of course pretty bad, but the practical effects are awesome.

Alien (1979). Last saw this in the theatres for the 40th anniversary in 2019. Can’t believe I’ve gone five years without watching it.

Alien-movies are my thing, no matter how bad I will see it in theatre. So with Alien Romulus on it’s way in August I decided to rewatch all four Ripley-movies, maybe Prometheus too. Probably can’t watch Covenant again. Maybe ever.

This movie is just absolute perfection. It’s no small wonder nothing that followed could be as good, not even Aliens, no matter how good it is the first one is still the best one for me. And scariest. I know this movie by heart, and it still makes me very uncomfortable.

Watched version was the theatrical cut on 4K Blu Ray. Fantastic transfer, the 2010 Blu Ray was very good but this one tops it. Hadn’t watched this version since maybe the 90s? Cutting the cocoon-scene was a good choice, but missed Lambert slapping Ripley (Veronica Cartwright did it for real on set), and the shot of the xenomorph dangling in the chains in the chain room. The latter is such a cool shot, it’s right there but you don’t see it if you don’t know it’s there.

Homegrove I’m a huge fan too, watched it recently with the missus as she hadn’t seen it and she wasn’t impressed, maybe because I told her it was amazing and she’d be terrified, it just didn’t live up to that hype.
I think I’ve always preferred Aliens anyway, there were far more intense scenes, the one where Ripley and Newt get locked in the room with the facehugger was really terrifying when I saw it first around 10 years old. Movies weren’t supposed to bring that much stress I was thinking. We tried renting it on Google movies recently and they had taken it down.

Homegrove It’s a Masterpiece for the limited time and budget. The script was sat for years in some film director’s draw and was literally discover by an incoming executive.

LT42 it’s back there now, the new Cameron AI-assisted remaster, which has been controversial to say the least. Ditto on iTunes, and free on Disney+. The latter still has the 2010-remaster.

Will watch the new 4K tonight, and report if it’s actually as bad as the purists say.

LT42 also iTunes has both versions, theatrical and the 1990 Special Edition which Cameron (and I) prefers. Not sure about Google. Disney+ only has the theatrical cut.

LT42 the making of-documentaries on all four movies on the Alien Anthology Bluray-boxset are fantastic. Everyone talking shit about each other, not seen that often in one of those things. O’Bannon especially fucking hates Giler. 😀

Aliens (1986).

Watched the new 4K Blu Ray, the 1990 special edition-version. The new transfer was done with AI from the 2010 2K digital intermediate previously released on 1080 Blu Ray. It looked much better. This new version is sharp as hell, and doesn’t seem to my have the wax faced DNR issues of the Terminator 2 4K to my eyes, but it’s lost all the grittiness the film used to have. People still have skin pores etc. I saw the previous version on the biggest screen in town last year, so I can say I much preferred it. But I guess some people (like Cameron) prefer this movie look like it was made today, instead of 1986. I preferred the old way. At least Cameron didn’t pull a Lucas and add some new CGI, the model stop motion dropship is still as wonky as it always was. And on a positive note the new Dolby Atmos-mix is awesome. Still, sadly this version is the only one available soon, I’d buy the old Blu Ray now that it’s still available if you love this movie. I’m certainly keeping my Alien Anthology box set.
