Alien Romulus : Enjoyed it. I think I’d give it a charitable 7.5 space stations / 10. It was very well put together and just about justified a trip to the flicks. It just wasn’t anything we’ve not seen before and completely lacking in any tension as a result.

Watched ‘The Zone of Interest’ last night. Can’t stop thinking about that bitch nazi wife. Menacing performance.

Haunting movie, but the Amazon prime subtitle situation ruined it, a constant spoiler with the background sounds being spelt out for me like I’m an idiot - (women screaming) (gun shot) (women crying) (dogs barking), made the experience feel very gimmicky. avoid the sound descriptions in the subtitles.

All this mention of the new Alien got me thinking that the only one in the franchise that I’ve seen is Prometheus, which was OK as a standalone action movie but I gather was derided by the fans.

I’ll deffo watch them in order soon. I gather Aliens is the best one? It must be given its a Cameron 80s film I suppose

Alien Romulus (2024): 6.5/10

Same premise, new cast. BERKS on a mining colony see an abandoned ship in space and think it’s their ticket to escape their shit existence. Not much novel here conceptually - some scenes in ducts, elevators, the usual xenomorphs, a CGI Ian Holm on the TV- all pretty ‘de rigeur’ but then @Smallman1 makes an appearance at the end to spice things up. Worth a watch just for his gurning face.

Just came out of Alien: Romulus in other words. They could have dialled down the fan service/ homage-department down about 25 % and it would have been much better. Way too many references to the old movies. But real well done, I booked us second row seats, and while it was a pain in the neck and I regretted it because of that all the space stuff was awesome when the screen was all you saw. And the mechanical facehuggers and xenomorphs were much better than the CGI crap on Alien Covenant.

Alien (1979)

This is proof that CGI is not needed to make a great action/Sci fi movie. I enjoyed it…..suspense, story, action and it’s interesting that the xenomorph was on screen for all of 5 minutes in total, yet it didn’t dilute the horror.

I didn’t see the Ian Holm/Ash twist coming at all and the special effects for that part were really well done.

8 out of 10 for me. I have the remaining 3 in the quadrilogy lined up

gcw special edition/ assembly cut of Alien3. The name is different depending on your copy. A MUCH better movie.

Must be well into double figures now. Has become our Dad / Daughter watch and always enjoyable.

Still funny and always loads going on in the background that you’ve never clocked before.
