Stakeout (1987). You know when you were growing up and you had about 10 movies on VHS which you just kept watching on rotation? Well this was one of mine. I bought it on DVD 20+ years ago, and that’s still the only format it’s available as. I watched it for the first time in ten years, and didn’t look too bad on standard definition, which was a nice surprise. The film itself is still great in my opinion. Which maybe coloured by nostalgia, but I stand by it.

Richard Dreyfuss is by all accounts a huge asshole in real life, but he’s got amazing chemistry here with both Emilio Estevez and Madeleine Stowe. The latter is also the hottest any woman has ever been in any movie in this. And manages to sell falling in love with Dreyfuss completely, so she’s obviously a very talented actor too, because that had to be acting. Says anyone who’s ever worked with Dreyfuss.

Homegrove haven’t seen that in a while but watched it loads when it came out. John Badham was solid director.

[unknown] still holds up eh? Watched it quite a few times as a kid. Remember loving the sequel as well, but jeez that’s got a 17% rotten tomato rating.

I hated the sequel when I saw it in theatre when it was released. Never watched it again.

Thief: Someone on here called this out, or it might have been on one of the podcasts. This is reallly good and I loved the last 40 mins when it sort of goes into overdrive after a bit of a slow burn. Timeless performance from Caan, though I did need subtitles. For 81, this barely has a hint of cheese, and it actually feels quite 70s, barring the sick soundtrack from Tangerine Dream. More entertaining than Heat, even though it is a fairly generic heist plot.

    8.8 / 10

[unknown] obligatory I have the Arrow Video Blu ray. Wife and I did a Michael Mann double bill earlier this year of this and The Insider, and it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday at home. Neither of us had seen Thief before.

      [unknown] lies. it was CJ

Homegrove I love that adaptation. The new one is dire.

        Deadpool & Wolverine

No idea why I put this on.

Criterion is putting out Thief in 4K in March. I assume US only. I hope Arrow will follow in the UK.

Speaking of Criterion, Punch-Drunk Love on 4K is on their February-selection. That’s a must buy. And will probably be the only Adam Sandler-movie in my physical collection.

        Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Sacked it off after 40 mins.

        Red Rooms

        Boss.

Very tense and was taken through a good range of emotions.

Chop the wrap-up off the end and would be a potential classic (though the fever and medicinal whisky could be clouding judgment).

Mad_Cyril yeah I want to see that one too. I’ll get an Apple TV-rental next week, heard so much good things about it.
