Brutalist happened yesterday. I was nervous with the run time, but for what it’s worth it holds you throughout. First half is a slow burn, rich character building, pushing the plot forward… second half is manic with a feverish pace. Something happens in the last 30 minutes (epilogue not included) that will probably split audiences. it had me perplexed, but after a night’s sleep it seems to make sense. Brody’s character is intriguing and entertaining, Pearce is good but you can tell he’s really turning it on. Felicia was miscast and a weak link. All the hype about the cinematography and it being visually stunning, its a bit overrated. there are moments, but i wouldnt go out of my way to watch it in imax.
It’s a good immigrant jew anti americana story, and probably deserves some awards for the acting. But it’s not tight and also overly indulgent.
