Speak no evil 7/10. Quiet an entertaining thriller, James McAvoy very convincing as a cornish psycho!

The Brutalist (2024). I’m going to have to sleep on it before I can pass judgement. Enjoyed watching it, but it had some bizarre choices in it, like the ending. Seeing it on a very big screen was great anyway, I wish we had a cinema with the capability to screen 70 mm film in this town though. The Vistavision-business maybe a hipster choice by the director, but the film did look amazing, especially when you factor in the budget.

VR46 LOL. I thought he was doing a ‘Bristolian’.

Wasily yeah can see what you mean. I was disappointed with the end to the brutalist but won’t leave any spoilers.

Homegrove was waiting for your review. Agreed, given the budget it’s quite nice on the eyes. But really, how stunning can a whole bunch of montages and weird angles of brutalist architecture be. Full of greys as well. Italy was great tbf, as well as the money shot of the library.

Haven’t seen the Brutalist, and don’t know that I will, but I have some strong opinions on brutalist architecture. Is there any mention of the work done in Brazil?

Amps nothing from brazil if i remember right, Brody’s character is from Budapest and enters America in 1947. You should give it a watch if Brutalist architecture interests you, the whole movie is centered around it.

rhouses Not sure I can handle that run time on that subject. I’d better start scanning this thread for snack advice!

Millsy Same film but it’s all shot in Hulme. Would watch.

VR46 Rewatch the bit when the kids are cominng down the ladder - the most awful stunt doubles you’ve ever seen - basically using grown men, it’s ridiculous. The original film is much better

My problem with Brutalist architecture is that it’s too brutal.

This is Norman Foster signing out.

            Black Bag (2005) 5.5/10

Saw this in the Royal Box in Curzon Mayfair which is quite good fun as you basically have 4 seats to yourselves in the cinema and can drink and chat without upsetting anyone. This should be a good movie- Soderbergh directs Blanchett, Fassbender, Brosnan, Naomi Harris, Tom Burke, Marissa Abela from Industry and the ‘hot black guy in Bridgerton’ that I saw 2 episodes of. However it feels budget and cheap rather than edgy, even managing to make London look pretty shit with the trademark ‘Pret-a-Manger’ handicam cinematogatophy, and the script is not great- basically a poor man’s ‘Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy’. Overall an enjoyable night due to the company and this movie I guess was perfect to sit and chat through. Wait for streaming though.

Wasily people I trust are loving it though (not a dig against you), so I will go see it in the theatre. In a month when it opens here. Soderbergh’s another 2025 film Presence is coming here in two weeks, that’s gotten more mixed reviews, but I want to see that one in the theatre too, I’m so happy Soderbergh is back in real cinema after doing streaming movies for HBO for so long.

Will be doing both Soderbergs in the cinema, happily.

                Avoid Novacaine, shit movie. 3 / 10

Millsy naaaah, not too much alcohol involved in this movie, but there is a hearty amount of skag. Which felt like a force fit if Im being honest.

Had a Second Sight released Blu ray double bill last night.

It Follows (2014). First time watching and I loved this. Some dodgy acting aside it was really really good. There’s a curse you can contract by having sex with a person who has it. The person who gave it to you is then free as long as you live. When you get it “it” will start following you. If it catches you it will kill you in a gruesome manner, but it can only move by walking towards you slowly so you can outrun it for quite some time. This was shot way better than most horror movies, and also had a weird timeline (nobody had cellphones, and the TVs were old tube TVs, otherwise everything seemed modern) and great 80s Carpenter style electronic soundtrack. Scary in the way I prefer (no jumpscares, instead it’s just really creepy).

Drive (2011). It’s been over ten years since I last watched this, and I wondered why. A perfect movie.
