A Bigger Splash. 2015, a very fit Tilda Swinton and an excellent, if highly irritating, Ralph Fiennes. I honestly don’t know if I loved it or hated it. If it was a 90s foreign film, I might’ve taken a different view - Fiennes character was so fucking irritating, but that was the point. Would love to have someone else’s view of this film. I can’t score it.

Monsters (2010)

Photographer dude tries to get some bird out of an alien-invaded Mexico.

Not perfect but damn better than the premise might imply.

7.5 octopus aliens out of 10.

It’s not a big monster movie so a little misleading for some…if you don’t like the film you’ll at least like the soundtrack…give it a go!…..there is obviously a chance you’ll think it’s absolute fucking tripe

Yeah it’s really quite good. And as Phil said, the alien/monster part is really more of a mood-setter than a major plot-point. They’re a backdrop. Had no idea Hopkins did the soundtrack. Next time I give it a go I’ll be sure to pay more attention to that.

Sound of metal - decent flick. Was a best picture nom alongside Nomadland and it’s quite similar in what it’s going for. Great acting and well directed. 8/10

Bohemian Rhapsody…dont know why I didn’t watch this when it came out…highly entertaining….reminded me just how strong the musical output from Queen was.. 8.5/10

Sound of Metal (2019, Riz Ahmed, Lauren Ridloff, Amazon Prime Video)

Riz Ahmed “cripples up” as a guy who loses his hearing in a loose remake of It’s all Gone Pete Tong (but it’s OK - he’s not white). The editing in this was brutal (it’s like he lost chunks of his memory rather than his hearing) but won an award for that apparently. One minute he’s an ASL novice, the next shot he’s almost fluent; he suddenly turns up in another continent looking for his bird.

I thought the Lauren Ridloff was good and could have been used more and I thought Ahmed’s would have been more frightened and upset by his loss of hearing rather than just mildly pissed off, but the sound design was great and there was a certain skill and authenticity in the way the whole thing was put together. Might deserve a rewatch.

Human Capital (2019, Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Maya Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Amazon Prime Video)

This is a drama about two families, one rich the other poor. They both have some issues. The two teenage kids are in a relationship which entwines the families in a darkish web of intrigue, money and secrecy. Ooooh. Exciting!

A low-key, quiet film-of-a-novel which pivots around an academic award dinner and what happens before and afterwards from the perspective of different protagonists as the layers of deception is gradually stripped away. Well acted and quite clever, I like Liev Schreiber and I like Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman’s daughter and I quite liked this movie.

Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time (2021, Natasa Stork, …Hungarian people, downloaded)

This is a noirish mystery/ romance movie set in Budapest about a fit brain surgeon who falls head over heels for this porky geezer who then gives her the run around, essentially. It’s quite arty (there are a lot of close up shots of people’s faces) but it has an incredible dreamy tone and sucks you into the shabby magnificence of Budapest with superb cinematography and sound. A bit more narrative oomph and this could have been a real winner. I would recommend for the visuals and sound alone.
