The Card Counter (2021)

Bit of a weird one this. Scorsese directing Oscar Isaac as an enigmatic ex-military police turned card sharp out for revenge on Willy DeFoe. Should be brilliant, right?

Sort of a slow burn mystery thriller / character study revolving around poker and blackjack with a brooding Drive-esque vibe/ soundtrack. Kind of goes nowhere but is a pretty good watch while it doesn’t quite get there.

Might require a 2nd view, I didn’t “get” Drive first time round either.

Nah Paul Shrader directed it. Scorsese just produced it. Shrader is an interesting dude. Made some really oddball movies (Hardcore is….something) but also wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull for ole’ Marty S.

Haven’t seen The Card Counter yet but looking forward to it. Pretty sure it’s my kind of film.

Watched this last night and really enjoyed. It was definitely a good break from the usual crop of CGI, action/adventure films that seem to dominate these days. It was really dark and brooding. The gambling theme reminded me of a film called Hard Eight, which I also enjoyed. Tonally it reminded me of Drive, which, like The Card Counter, used its soundtrack to good effect to build on the overall mood of the film. Definitely gonna grab the CC soundtrack when it is released.

And I was just pointing out Schrader (sp.) ’cause I think he’s an interesting director that many don’t seem to know. The scene in Hardcore where George C Scott watches his daughter doing porn is hilarious.

Anyway it’s a decent little movie. Isaac is fascinating but it left me a little cold and lacked emotional depth for me.

I kinda want to see TCC again in a theatre, for the atmosphere. Which is not something I say often.

Green Knight… well reviewed by Mark Kermode, I thought this was going to be a Lord of the Rings type film… was a load of pretentious Shakespearean bollocks as it turned out….5/10
