I wouldn’t say DLU was, like, a masterpiece that you simply must revisit or anything. But I dunno, I enjoyed it. I thought Di Caprio and Lawrence were good in it (often I find it hard to see big name stars as anything other than “Famous Actor Playing a Role for Money” but I felt they kind of disappeared into the role quite well here). I also thought Rylance and Blanchette were really good, bringing acutely observed, skilful performances to comedic roles that could have otherwise been trite or caricatures. I also thought the script was good and it was pretty well paced and generally well directed and put together. It didn’t feel to me like one of those rushed, commercially-driven, “let’s just get this shit in the can and move onto the next pay check” type affairs. Which I appreciated.
And I also thought it had some fairly interesting things to say and a fairly interesting way of saying them.
I guess what I mean is that it was a subjectively good, entertaining movie rather than one which was clearly great in some more objective sense. And, yeah, maybe I’d expect it to resonate less with someone like, say, Rhouses, what with him ya know not being immersed in a terminally declining, ageing, end-stage post-industrial capitalist culture to the extent we in the West are and all.
