I started watching Licorice Pizza last night.

Got about 70 minutes through it and to be fair it was alright - like, I was kind of enjoying it? - but I couldn’t be arsed with another 70 odd minutes of it.

It had very little narrative propulsion which makes it hard to stay invested over the long haul imo.

Mad_Cyril well. to be honest mate if you can’t get through more than half of it, it’s not exactly a ringing endorsement is it.

As for a rating, I dunno. But would I recommend it? No….not unless you were like really stoned and could really lock into it for 2 hours. Fuck all happens basically, that’s the problem.

C_J Bit like Lost in Translation

C_J It’s a hangout, teen rom com, with a series of random scenarios in which the central relationship is generally put to test. Not sure if you’re supposed to go into it expecting “things to happen”. That being said, I struggled with the first hour as well and turned it off. On second go, and completing it, it made whole lot of sense to me.

Great movie imo.

rhouses you can tell (hopefully) that I wasn’t totally willing to write this film off and consign it to the bin forever. I accept that premise that good films don’t necessarily always present as such on first viewing, and that set and setting can be relevant. I do struggle with PTA in general though.

Felt the same about There Will Be Blood when I watched it the first time. On second go and thereafter, it’s easily my Top 5 movie.

C_J Pretty much got instant gratification with Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Phantom Thread.

Punch Drunk Love, Inherent Vice, and There Will Be Blood - I struggled on first viewing, enough to think what is this pretentious bollocks. But then found them incredible on viewings after (must have seen each at least three times).

One thing that was good about it was how richly imagined it was, a lot of background texture. Another key aspect for me was Alana Haim and the dichotomy of her face and body. A proper borderline boiler if every I saw one for whom the phrase “body off baywatch face off crime watch” could have been invented.
