Till… true story about a black schoolboy (14 years old) from Mississippi murdered for wolf whistling a white woman and his mother’s subsequent fight for justice…. A fine performance from Danielle Deadwyler, this is a hard hitting dramatisation… recommended 8/10

We very much enjoyed The Pale Blue Eye on Netflix. Critics for most part didn’t. Great cast, and the acting by them was top notch. Gillian Anderson especially was great. What I most liked was how they portrayed life in the early 1800s. The light was very well done, you get a great idea how dark it must’ve been after dark when all you had for lightning were candles.

The Menu (2022) (Disney+)

This was almost OK. Anna Taylor-Joy is very tasty and the film is quite well put-together. It looked and sounded good. Nicholas Hoult & Ralph Fiennes are watchable.

On the downside, it had very little plot, almost nothing to say and I was looking for the check after about 45 mins.

Once Upon a Time in the West. Absolute magic. The opening 10 minutes were great, right up to famous mouth organ pangs of the classic Sergio Leone soundtrack being played seductively by Charles Bronson. Movies like this put the whole raging forest fire that is Netflix Movies into perspective.

Lawrence of Arabia. I don’t really know where to start with this - blacked-up actors and plastic hooked noses? What were they thinking? The acting may well have been great for its time, but fuck me it looks awful and wooden now - old Lawrie looked like an extra from Thunderbirds. Stupidly long too. On the upside, cinematography was fantastic and I learnt something historically that I never knew. 4/10.

It’s on Netflix if you find yourself tempted. It certainly won’t be on my rewatch list.

Yeah I watched that over Chrimbo. Ole Pete did look like a Thunderbird, lol. Of its time for sure. They built a special wide angle camera for the mirage on the horizon scene with Omar Sharif, amazing for back then. It was never used again by any studio and only used for that scene.

Low-budget Bollywood vehicle in which a Muslim shopkeeper in Rajasthan is tormented endlessly by a sociopathic superior caste Hindu in a mobility scooter, who effortlessly switches between pretending to befriend him to obtain imports of rare Hooj Choons and Bonsai vinyl and robbing him blind when his back is turned.

Didn’t really see the point. 5/10

bosstrabs I can’t imagine vinyl does very well in the Mumbai heat, it’d start to curl up at the edges like a day old ham sandwich.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. Watching this in HD some of the sets and matte backgrounds look like they were from the forties rather than the 80s, which might have been deliberate. But my god it’s a perfectly edited film, such good pacing. They cut out a lot of expository scenes (like how Indy survives the submarine-trip) to achieve it, because Spielberg was wise enough to realize that the movie didn’t need them, people will overlook a lot if the movie is good enough otherwise.

The Pale Blue Eye.

Shades of Tom Hardy’s Taboo but nowhere near as good although it has a decent cast and the premise is quite good. Started off well but became farcical by the end. Worth a watch but nothing more. 6/10
