Homegrove I get through Three network £4 cinema tickets, but I wasn’t wasting it on that crud.

Anora (2024) 8/10

‘Exotic Dancer’ marries young Russian twat with rich parents. Parents not happy and try to annul the marriage.

Lot of comparisons to Pretty Woman in the media for this movie. IMO it has very little in common bar the occupation of the protagonist. It’s well acted though and parts of it are hilarious, however with an underlying subtext of being trapped, emotionally, physically or financially. Very different to anything I’ve seen recently (so was Substance) but this decent and some very under-rated acting especially from Yura Borisov who I think would get a nod from me for best supporting actor.

Wasily I loved how the second act turned into a three stooges-skit. I do love good goons in movies.

Really enjoyed a first rewatch of The Prestige in a long time. Scarlett Johansson’s attempt at a British accent is pretty bad though. Somehow never noticed that before.

Challengers - really enjoyed this. Was surprised at the mad pop score being Trent Reznor lol. 8 smashed rackets / 10

Transformers One - decent. Hopefully they get to do another one as they obviously cared about the franchise. No Megan Fox arse to be seen. 7.5 / 10

Wally Challengers is definitely in my top three of 2024 films.

      It’s What’s Inside (2024)

      hahaha this was class

      8/10

Not hearing great things about Gladiator 2. “Putting the ‘meh’ in Mezcal etc.”

Wasily some positives too, I sort of like a split room with the critics in this one. I doubt anyone was expecting a master piece. I just want spectacle, and Denzel off the leash which I’m both sure to get with this one.

Ridley’s best in years but not as good as the first / Mezcal not as good as Crowe is what I’m hearing - hardly surprising. Denzel meant to be brilliant.

Homegrove Agree. My sweet spot on RT would be critics 60-70% and audience 90%+.

It’ll be getting the ole s to the werve from me that is for sure.

If the second one is worse than the first, it must be an absolute fucking stinker.

Smallman1 It’ll be getting the ole s to the werve from me that is for sure.

It’s not a cartoon, so this is a given anyway!

If anyone would like an interesting take on this film, I can highly recommend ‘Glad he ate her.’

Macbeth (2015). From the top of my shame-pile, movies I’ve bought and never watched. Well I did today. One of the most amazing movies visually I have EVER seen, but I got to tell you as someone who is not used to Shakespeare I was very happy this had Finnish subtitles.

Marion Cotillard in this is amazing.

Watched The Holdover at the weekend and thought it was decent. Always thought Paul Giamatti was a great actor so knew I would like this. Should have saved it for over Xmas to enjoy it even more

                7.5/10

Also caught 15 mins of Sasquatch Sunset and it was fucking weird. As confirmed by my wife who watched the whole thing. That film was on The Economists films of the year!

Homegrove Great adaptation. I watched this a while back with my Daughter as it was part of her syllabus.

Homegrove This was a complete mind fuck. Need to give the Coen x Denzel adaption a viewing soon.

Rewatched “Hereditary” for the first time since its release in the cinema. Remember hating the ending, but goddamn, the whole thing is near flawless the second time around. Top tier horror movie and this time I was totally fine with all the Satanic stuff. 9.1 / 10

Strange Darling: Good, not great by any means. The gender role reversal, while relatively surprising, felt a tad bit forced. The format and play with time was entertaining and fun. Worth a watch for the action and tension. There are better movies in this genre imo.

                6.9 / 10

Gladiator II. What was good was good (the battles, the sets, Paul Mescal), what was bad was really bad (the dialogue, somehow Connie Nielsen, probably due to the bad writing). But holy shit Denzel. There was scenery and he was chewing it. This was Training Day, Man on Fire, American Gangster Denzel. He was sooo good this movie is worth seeing just for him.

Doing IMAX at 950AM. Here goes! Found the Denzel gay kiss stories doing the rounds hilarious.

seanc80 you’ll hate it. Kinda bad, but entertaining. To put it in ranking of Ridley’s films this decade (The Last Duel, Napoleon and this) I liked this one the least. Not seen House of Gucci though, but by all accounts it’s terrible, so this was probably better than that.

I wouldn’t go that far, but if you watched it I bet you would. I mean I liked The Last Duel and Napoloen so…

I think Sean is trying to find out how much of the film Paul Mescal goes tops off for, Hannu. Humour him.

                  seanc80 so its shite?

What H is trying to say is 'Its a half decent film, but they cast Denzel Washington in it, so the second he appears on film, it becomes a Denzel Washington film, like all Denzel Washington films do, and you can’t believe the Denzel Washington exists anywhere other than in modern day America, rendering the whole historical setting of the film null, thus undermining the entire endeavour.'

I was hoping it was going to be better than the trailer suggested.

Just watched the Kermode review. Space monkeys and sharks? Not sure even Denzel can counterbalance that shithousery.

It really didn’t need a sequel did it?

Gladiator 2: Plot wise, I actually think it’s pretty good especially for a sequel but the way the end plays out is farcical. You’re invested in what’s going to happen, but holy fuck the script and dialogue is bad. Like fucking awful. I cringed every single time someone spoke. Paul Mezcal is terrible, a combo of goofy and completely wooden. Hannu needs to calm himself, this isn’t Training Day, tense af, Denzel. This is campy Denzel, who isn’t taking himself too seriously and having fun. There’s some spectacle to the action, but that also felt quite flat.

You should still watch it if you enjoyed the first one, but go with really low expectations and it could a so bad it’s good experience.

                      5.3 / 10

Amps there’s so much more than his accent that is historically inaccurate. The accent-thing is a stupid nitpick anyway when they are all speaking English.

                      • Amps replied to this.

                        We need Roman accents!

                        Mama Mia! He’s a chopped-a off-a his arm-a!

A lol for H looking for historical accuracies in Gladiator 2!
