Beast of War. A bunch of Austrailian soldiers in WW2 are stranded when their boat is sunk at sea. A hungry shark is also looking for food. Obviously low budget but pretty well done with not too much of the shark being seen but it seems to be all practically done. Nasty kills and decent performances.

I mostly find Ridley Scott’s recent style of doing interviews clearly not caring what people think about what he says funny and amusing, but him calling this too long, boring and he wishing he’d directed it himself is bullshit. It would not be this good with anyone else but Villeneuve in charge.
I am also puzzled Sylvia Hoeks didn’t become a bigger actor after this. She’s a revelation in it.

The Thin Red Line (1998). The Criterion Collection Blu ray starts with a note "The director Terrence Malick recommends “The Thin Red Line” be played loud." I did. I think he wants the battle scenes to feel extra visceral. This is a fascinating flip side to the other big 1998 war movie Saving Private Ryan, interested even more on the horror and futility of war rather then the valor. Of which there is very little here.

Over last couple of days have watched

Woman of the Hour, directed and starred Anna Kendrick. Was fairly decent, based on a true storey. Not as good as Blind Date!! 6/10

Uprising, Japanese film on Netflix. Really enjoyed it, some great fight scenes. 7.5/10

Tornado, staring Tim Roth. Really wanted to enjoy this when I first saw the trailer, but it was shit. 4.5/10

Mad_Cyril I am going to need to check how it looks streaming on Disney+, the Criterion Blu ray looked like the movie was shot today, not 30 years ago. Truly impressive what a well done new scan of the original camera negative can do. And the remaster of the movie is exclusive to Criterion.

Spartacus (1960)

Three hours of melodrama dressed up as sword and sandals action. Way more drab than I remember it being. Not one Kubrick brought up at dinner parties imo. Could have done with more Ustinov and less Olivier imo.

I’ve watched Toy Story 1-3 the last couple of days - they really are very funny and well observed. When they factory reset Buzz Lightyear to Spanish is a proper highlight. All 9/10s

Koyaanisqatsi (1982). Apparently this genre of film making is called non narrative documentary. This is the oldest of the big three with Ron Fricke (he shot this and directed Baraka and Samsara). These are always great when you want to pause everything for 90 minutes, even if not all you will see is pleasant. Baraka and Samsara next. Those I got cheap on Blu ray, this was bought from Apple. Shame about the picture quality, this one needs a proper 4K scan like was given to Baraka and Samsara.
