A year from the day David Lynch passed today. I am this year finally going to watch the four films of his that have previously passed me by, starting with this.
This is some first picture by a director. It’s really funny that Mel Brooks loved it.

Dan I’m not a huge Carpenter-guy, but I do love Halloween, this, The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China very much. The rest… Eh. Never seen They Live, that could go either way with me probably.

Enjoyed the RIP on Netflix. Damon and Affleck as grizzled narc cops. Good popcorn movie. Well shot, strong action scenes, the odd twist and has you on the edge of your favourite armchair. Solid 8/10

alistair watching this is the extent of this evening’s plans.

From the director’s past work I still have an unwatched Blu ray-copy of The Grey to check out, and I remember Narc being really good, if really fucking grim. I should probably watch that one again too, haven’t seen it since it was released on DVD, so 2003 I guess?

Homegrove I will be keen to know what you think. There were some flaws but I really enjoyed it. I loved Narc with Ray Liotta. That was a great and underrated cop movie

alistair well it’s not been available to watch in the streaming era easily either. Still not available even to rent from Google or Apple in Finland.
Arrow released it on 4K Blu ray in 2024, I’ll probably buy it when Rarewaves has their next sale, the price there is already decent. I guess it’s not a seller.

The Rip (2026).
A really good unoriginal action thriller of the kind we used to get at least five a year. Now it’s one every five years maybe.
For a real life smoker Ben Afleck looks really bad with a cigarrette in a movie.
3,5/5 stars, extremely complimentary.

Homegrove Damon and Affleck were talking about the movie industry at length and their filmographies on the Rogan podcast. Some great anecdotes and an interesting profit share agreement with their production team based on the success of this film.

Damon went on some length on his Hot Ones-interview how the death of DVD sales actually killed the mid budget movie, before not every movie needed to be a hit because the studios could expect to make their money back from home entertainment sales. That money is not there anymore, so now every film is either a small indie or a huge blockbuster. The thrillers were mid budget movies, and now streaming is largely the only home for them.
