Mississippi Grind (2015)

Ryan Reynolds, Ben Mendelsohn & Sienna Miller in a road-trip-cum-odd-couple buddy-movie based around gambling.

Not great but not bad either. Meh.

I loved all of it. The oral sex joke. The massacre. The Jaguar. The speech. The waterfall. The sun god. The themes of family vs religion/ the state.

Then being chased by men that could kill a running man 100m away with spears and bows and arrows suddenly unable to hit a barn door from 10m. I don’t mind suspending belief, but when it gets worse than a Bond film, I’m out.

See, for me, that was powerful and clever because it juxtaposed the wealth and social dominance of the Mayan ruling class with their ignorance of natural phenomena.
