Hursty A properly done roast is top of the tree for spuds hence it’s place on the Xmas dinner plate. Mash surely is more of a weekday staple, although I maybe missing something and each to their own!
seanc80 Don’t get me wrong, roast potatoes are as much a staple of Christmas dinner as creamed are over here.
-si- At the risk of ridicule, an xmas dinner plate will have: Turkey Ham Stuffing Roast Mash Parsnips Red Cabbage Sprouts (not on my plate!) Gravy Cranberry relish/sauce
Millsy -si- no mash! Christmas Dinner is supposed to be a super-duper roast dinner. So what the actual fuck is mashed potato doing on there? A pauper’s side dish.
Along_the_Wire -si- I’d lose the parsnips, mash and the cranberry sauce personally and add some cauliflower, broccoli and carrots.
bosstrabs I have to say, I had an Irish grandma, unfortunately no longer with us but I am eternally grateful to her blessed Papalist soul for my Brexit parachute, and this many types of potato thing is new to me.
-si- Two types of potato, dave. And it’s very common in england from what i can see on the interweb also. And grant has a normal sunday dinner except with turkey so he’s out. Can anyone on here come close to sean and my own magnificent festive feasts?
bosstrabs -si- neck tattoos and dogging are also now very popular in England, doesn’t make them right
vinnyt77 Millsy A well made mash is a beautiful thing. Use the right potatoes, well seasoned, lashings of butter. Anything but a pauper’s dish…
Millsy Si, for reference, the rest of your list seems ok. Not sure i would have the ham personally. Prefer to save that for Boxing Day cold meats and bubble.
Hursty Millsy It’s a typo, was supposed to read Turkey-Ham. Think Bernard Matthews is a fine purveyor of such clever culinary delights.
Along_the_Wire I don’t have any issue with anyone having mash with their Christmas dinner, or any roast, but if I wanted more potato on my plate, I would have more roast potatoes.
Kumquat vinnyt77 A well made mash is a beautiful thing. Use the right potatoes, well seasoned, lashings of butter. Anything but a pauper’s dish… Totally agree, No milk or cream though. I personally hate wet mash.
