-si- I have to say i absolutely love the traditional/old school route. Prawn cocktail, turkey and ham and sherry trifle.
bosstrabs No offence Si, but I think the ‘traditional’ route is supposed to be goose. Turkey came over from the Americas, and only became popular relatively recently.
jonattonyeah bosstrabs Turkey is a big “no” as we get our fill for that on Thanksgiving just a month earlier. Prime Rib is my personal choice but so many like their meat cooked at different temps so that’s been a problem at times. Ham makes me think of Easter but is lamb the go-to there in the UK?
Dubman It’s all about the prep. Get the bird in early as you can so you can, cook it and let it rest. It will be much easier to carve plus it will free up the oven space. For me it’s all about the gravy. I make my own chicken stock the day before out of thighs & legs then add it to the turkey juices.
-si- Dubman Absolutely mate, I try to do as much as i can from scratch. Stocks, sauces, sides, trifles, mince pies etc. Enjoy the challenge.
Smallman1 Having Turkey and Beef this year. I shan’t be going anywhere near the cooking though, I will be ledging the bants from the sofa though, natch.
Along_the_Wire One thing about being a vegetarian is the disappointment of Christmas dinner. Getting a fake stuffed turkey roll thing from The Vegan Butcher this year, which is meant to be excellent. Still love cooking Christmas dinner mind - relative peace and quiet in the kitchen.
-si- Along_the_Wire That’s it for me, you can nearly get a full 24 hours over a two day period out of it. Telling people to get out as you are busy lol. Tunes on and a drink, it’s bliss before the madness of a house full on xmas day and beyond.
mono-stereo My favourite is probably rib of beef for bosshog dinner. A good Sunday roast/Christmas dinner hinges on the gravy.
Kells77 I’m trying to convince my family that we should do sandwiches and hors d’ouvres and games instead of the traditional fancy dinner. We can still have Christmas ham! So far, my brother and sister are on board, but my mom is not pleased 😂
Kells77 Along_the_Wire Yeah….I wanna keep it casual. I’d rather wear my pajamas all day and just hang with the family. So….ham sandwiches (with plenty of cheese and condiment options), and an hors d’ouvres buffet are what I’m pushing for.
