hugopal Jules72 78k cases in the U.K. today… looking rather perky… So you’ll soon find out if indeed Omicron is much milder, which the early indications still point towards.
vinnyt77 hugopal I saw an early study out of South Africa yesterday suggesting illness severity might be reduced by ~ 30%, which is good. The seemingly much faster transmission will swallow that advantage pretty quickly though.
hugopal New study from Hong Kong finds Omicron grows 70x quicker in bronchial tissue than original and Delta variants “that could help explain its rapid transmission”, while on the flip-side it “grew 10 times slower in lung tissue, which the authors said could be an indicator of lower disease severity”. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/15/omicron-found-to-grow-70-times-faster-than-delta-in-bronchial-tissue
alistair Purely anecdotal but the people I know at work that have tested positive in the last week to ten days have barely broken stride. Certainly wasn’t the case with Delta.
hugopal Smallman1 “People who have cold-like symptoms in London are more likely to have Covid than a cold, according to the scientist behind the Zoe coronavirus symptom tracker app.” So now if I said that Covid is basically just the flu I could well be over-exaggerating.
hugopal "On Wednesday, Dr Meaghan Kall, an epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said that care homes and hospital wards were seeing 50 to 80 per cent of people infected - levels not seen since before the vaccination programme began. But she added: “They are mostly asymptomatic and mild infections. I remain optimistic about omicron being milder." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/12/15/omicron-spreads-70-times-faster-airways-delta-10-times-slower/
jonattonyeah I swear you can find any number of articles saying it’s nothing more than a cold all the way to it being radioactive AIDS. Fact is, there’s likely to be substantial regional variation depending on any number of factors so I would take most of said articles with a grain of salt.
mono-stereo jonattonyeah radioactive AIDS Sounds like the type of thing you’d catch in the former Soviet Union.
hugopal jonattonyeah I swear you can find any number of articles saying it’s nothing more than a cold all the way to it being radioactive AIDS. If it’s so simple, then how about posting an article from a reputable source stating that Omicron is anywhere near as bad as “radioactive AIDS”.
jonattonyeah alistair Because nobody has ever fibbed a story on the internet to reinforce some preconceived beliefs. Never.
mono-stereo Mikhail Gorbachev once spilled a load of radioactive AIDS all over the back seat of his LADA.
jonattonyeah mono-stereo Mikhail Gorbachev once spilled a load of radioactive AIDS all over the back seat of his LADA Radioactive AIDS spill confirmed.
mono-stereo "“Mr. Gorbachev - tear down this wall!” “Can you just fuck off for a bit yeah? i’ve had a right day of it already”
hugopal Along_the_Wire The missus barely has any symptoms - a bit achey Sounds absolutely dreadful Grant, I hope she gets well soon. Thoughts and prayers! Keep your chin up fella, we’re here if you need any support in this difficult time; I’m sure we can pull through it.
Along_the_Wire alistair there’s a two week lag in hospitalisations isn’t there? Two weeks ago there were 43 cases in England. Yesterday there were 10,000. I’m not being negative here, just a little cautious - it’s definitely too early to pop the Champagne.
alistair Along_the_Wire agreed, just trying to find a sense of proportion amidst all the premature doom mongering on the TV.
