People voted for Brexit to stop the country being flooded with cheap labour, reducing the wages of low skilled workers. Now people are saying it’s not right to prevent minimum wage earners in the hospitality industry from earning a living, forcing them into poverty and crime.

It doesn’t seem controversial or immoral to me to want to protect the interests of people on low wages from cheap overseas labour or from poorly targeted lockdowns. I guess that’s the difference between the right and the left though; the right really want to support the workers, whereas the left just wants to “tax the corrupt rich bastards”

You’re actually pretty much backing up what I was saying btw, which was that so far it has been shown to be various separate factors which have contributed to higher rates of Covid amongst BAME groups, rather than them just being BAME per se which puts them at risk.

Nope, benson stated that being BAME made you more at risk from covid, when so far it has been shown that it’s other factors more prevalent in certain BAME communities which cause the risk; e.g. all other things being equal, a person being BAME has not been shown to make a difference as to whether they will be more at risk from covid or not. However, all other things being equal, a person being obese, for example, has been shown to make a difference.

It’s amusing, because your first statement actually supports me rather than benson, but you’re so incapable of understanding nuance and looking beyond your own bias that you’re unable to figure it out.

What we’ve seen here (San Francisco) is Latino/a/x have been getting the brunt of it. People with backgrounds in Mexico and Central America. The positivity rates are about the same (if not somewhat higher due to targeted testing events) but the symptoms have been far more severe. No idea as to why. Many in this demo are also undocumented and often service avoidant which further complicates the issue.

My activation is supposed to end at the end of the year. I don’t see that happening. We could be here for a long while yet.

The “right” caring for anyone other than their own selfish impulses is a bit of a non runner, CJ. I thought that’s the foundation of Conservatism, keep your hands off my stack etc etc.

Bottom line is people voted for the Tory Party, in a blind and misinformed frenzy, and now they’ll be on the wrong end of a Tory program that will fuck them more ways than they could’ve possibly imagined. Anyone voting against “cheaper labour” and for Queen Vics face on a plate look like some dick heads now, don’t they? The very ones giving out because they can’t go down the pub for a quiet drink. Jason Marriner, who probably has a Brexit tattoo, on social media now saying it all stinks, the Govt can’t be trusted etc. There’s droves like him.

And what about the artistic industry? I bet there’s a gaggle of them who voted for the Tory Party too.

In summary - it’s a giant cluster fuck and it’s a bit rich for most to be giving out now that the chickens have come home to roost. They trusted these ghouls with running the country. And it’s not unique to the UK. The Irish did the same fucking thing.

LT42 The alternative was Jeremy Corbyn. We really haven’t missed out on much. 90% of his own MPs knew he couldn’t run a bath and was a complete liability. Sir Keir by contrast has the air of competency.

I think what you are maybe getting at is “Tory politicians are Nasty and don’t care about People, so if you voted for them don’t complain when they Do Nasty Things like …. close pubs and not pay your wages. If you had instead voted for Labour or some other non-Tory party they would have a) kept pubs open b) got rid of Covid c) paid full wages indefinitely to everyone affected”

alistair I don’t think a “yeah we’re fucked but imagine if it was the other guy” is well timed, Alistair. Nobody knows where the UK would’ve been if Labour were voted in, it’s all hypothetical, you have to work with what you currently have and it can’t get much worse, if it all.

C_J Not sure he is aware of the furlough scheme and its relative generosity, but then again he doesn’t live here…I know people who have been quite literally doing nothing on 80% salary since March.
