Question for @benson - how is it that being Indian causes someone to be more at risk from covid than a white person? Surely you’re not claiming they have more vulnerable genetics, are you?

See my post above, how is my claim any less “bias towards non-white people” than what benson has claimed? In fact it could reasonably argued it’s the reverse.

@303abuser and yourself can also chip in trying to answer the questions I have put to benson in my previous post, but I suspect you’ll also struggle with it given your inability to see the wood for the trees.

hugopal you can’t grasp that systemic racism exists, so i really don’t expect you to understand the myriad of socio-economic, health, genetic, and other factors that could result in those from a BAME background being disproportionally affected by covid. just read benson’s posts again, he was very clear, you’re the only one who doesn’t get it.

Benson may be doing an admirable job at the coal face and have more medical knowledge in his scrotum than the rest of the board (excluding Wasily) combined, but he outed himself as the statistical equivalent of a flat-earther with his “both nurses that died were BAME” anecdote AFAIK.

The truth is that we now live in a post-facts society where truth and reality is simply the consensus view. No-one is interested in exploring the actual objective scientific truth in a mature and rational way anymore (far too scary) to the extent that even mortal enemies Sean and Ed will join forces to sacrifice intellectual curiosity at the altar of consensual reality.

One factor which may or may not contribute to BAME susceptibility is quite simple: darker skin + British climate = less vitamin D from the sun = less strong immune system.

Do we agree this is plausible, or nah? Personally I think it might be part of the explanation but would be interested to hear other views.

Vitamin D deficiency also does appear to be a factor in susceptibility to covid:

Vitamin D supplements can reduce risk amongst the general population.

No dog in this fight but going against the grain isn’t an issue. The shield the vulnerable/build up herd community/follow Sweden crowd were ridiculed and shouted down in March. Not looking so bad now, especially when it seems that every Northerner with a voice appears to be contradicting their previous comments on social media demanding to see the evidence as to why pubs and restaurants should close. Lockdown only works when it doesn’t apply to you

Something that chimed with me the other day was when some bloke was talking about the furlough scheme. Wish I could remember who it was, think it might have been the council leader of Liverpool or someone like that.

Anyway, basically they were saying if the govt are saying to folk “we are making it illegal for you to do your job” and that person is on minimum wage, how can they not be replacing their full wage? How are those people expected to be able to survive and keep a roof over their heads?

The economic damage and poverty that is being inflicted on people is absolutely incalculable.
