I’ve tested negative three times now (LFT only) so think I’m in the clear. I haven’t had a sore throat or cough or high temperature in 2 days. Occasional mild headache. I still have a slightly runny nose.

I feel a brighter this morning.

Have to say if what I had was what most people have now, no mostly-vaccinated country should be locking down or even bothering with measures whatsoever. We’re all going to get it unless we have no friends and family, and that’s that.

alistair Huge surprise, if you don’t make people quarantine when sick, they won’t actually quarantine.

You can’t have a quarantine/isolation/test and trace policy that’s all carrot, no stick, because it’s just a pointless waste of money.

Jon, whats the craic with Paxlovid in terms of effectiveness and usage? I’ve seen it pop up several times over the last few weeks as some kind of miracle drug. It’s whole existence passed me by.

It’s an HIV med. A protease inhibitor. I’m not totally familiar with it for Covid but I do know it was included in treatments for prior coronaviruses and there was talk of including it with vaccines as a pre-exposure prophylactic (hence some loons freaking out about the vaccines containing HIV). But I don’t think it worked so Pfizer and the like didn’t bother. Many meds have uses beyond what they’re primarily prescribed for, so maybe Ritonavir could help with Covid treatment, but I’m not sure. It’s very effective for HIV PrEP. We’ve been using it for years with HIV high risk groups (MSM meth users, sex workers, Ed Smallman, etc.)

Yes, but many of them are old and uneducated and choose not to take it because they believe in TCM rather than ‘Western’ medicine. Also the inertia / relaxedness that has come from being COVID-free for so long.

Vaccinations aren’t mandatory (and they shouldn’t be). Testing and quarantine are. In all honesty, I think it’s been a more humane system with better effects and much lower death rates than other countries.

Possibly, but more likely you’ve ingested too much BBC and Daily Mail, both of whom are actually fucking clueless when it comes to China. The BBC have correspondents on rotation, who do about 3 years in Hong Kong and can’t speak a word of the language, let alone read it, before landing a cushy gig in Washington or Brussels.

If you want serious analysis of China’s domestic and international policies, read someone like Tuvia Gering or Bill Bishop (neither of whom are exactly PRC-friendly either)
