So before you conclude that Omicron is going to fizzle out⌠the past week cases have been doubling every couple of days in South Africa ⌠and the following link (page 3) shows hospitalisations - the pick up (from a low base) is way more rapid than for previous strains. 33% of hospitalisations have been severe vs 66% for the delta wave. So even though the strain looks likely to be milder in terms of probability of severe illness and death, because of high transmissibility we might end up with a lot more cases than for delta and as many deaths⌠anyway, itâs hard to know at this stage how things will pan out but I wouldnât dismiss its potential impact yet.

This guy has some really interesting insights - recommend listening .. his big concern is the reports about babies falling ill for to Omicron⌠and, he says, if thatâs the case that will have a big impact on the way the West looks at and deals with the strain:
Thatâs probably what is also fuelling the steps currently being taken by countries like Germany. I.e. if the unvaccinated are still unwilling to get the vaccine â even though it could result in their death and that of others â countries will increasingly begin to favour measures that will seek to appeal to the selfish outlook of the unvaccinated through the use of incentives like fines and barring them from participating in society. I imagine other countries will be watching to see what happens, and if successful, they will also start adopting the same. It will all be relative the extent of the exasperation of each country with sections of society that prevent the majority from progressing and how you persuade people who care more about what they have read on social media than they do about other people.
whatever following on from what youâre talking about here, did you see what Greece are supposedly going to be doing?
"Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced mandatory Covid-19 vaccination for all Greeks above 60 years of age before a cabinet meeting in Athens on Tuesday, in an effort to tackle the new omicron variation threat ahead of the festive season.
Those who refuse to get vaccinated will have to pay a monthly fine of 100 euros ($114) for each month they donât get jabbed, starting on Jan. 16, according to Mitsotakis. The penalty will be imposed by the tax authorities directly to those who havenât been inoculated and the funds collected will be given to Greek hospitals fighting the pandemic.
âIt is not a punishment,â Mitsotakis said. âI would say it is a health fee.â"
Got to love the Greeks!
jonattonyeah minus the fires, moderate is a nice place to be.
It is explained with reference to my post before that, which is that where it concerns Covid, you have to apply measures to society as a whole (think LT42 said âyou canât compartmentalise). Thatâs because it doesnât work if you only apply restrictions to the unvaccinated. Like it or not, we are all in it together, and in this particular case, the success of our society is contingent on what we do together (or donât, as the case may be). Is it possible that the case of the German policy on club admissions might be less favourable for some people? Possibly, yes. Is that a reason to not make difficult objective decisions that are oriented towards ridding us of the virus? Definitely not.
Hugo and whatever are dangerously close to being struck off the afters list.
No American Hots at mine.
And thatâs with Zackster present.
Oi oI!
