Was it dismissed? I dunno, but in my work circles we always considered it a possibility, just knowing that we’ll never get a honest answer from China so what’s the point in speculating.
All I know is that we have a high level virology lab in Richmond, CA. A short BART ride away. If we all of a sudden had an outbreak of something weird in Richmond we’d be asking A LOT of questions. Too much of a coincidence. Same with Wuhan. That said, coronaviruses have been floating about for a long time, particularly in China. It’s not unreasonable to think this just happened irrespective of labs or nefarious motives.
