      I think there are actually only 4 direct flights a week, and these only resumed at all in August 2022. What’s that, about 1200 people a week?

                  Well, the UK could make it difficult for Chinese travellers, simply to reciprocate the difficulties China’s closed borders and quarantine have caused UK business travellers to China. I actually think that level of petty spite is actually what’s pushing Japan and the US’ policies rather than genuine concern about a new variant that ‘might’ emerge. It is of course reasonable - this is how international diplomacy is sometimes conducted.

                  As Grant says it probably wouldn’t actually stop whichever variant arriving though.

                            This is correct. China still just have the Omicron strain, which we’ve already had in the West and is no longer worth worrying about.
