Mad_Cyril I think youâre right MC. Weâre entering the cat and mouse endgame of yearly vaccine rollouts to match the latest spike protein mutations in the virus, much like flu. What upsets me is that countries that have controlled the virus will rightly have no incentive to dropping the measures that have protected their populations: 2-3 week quarantines on arriving travellers etc. (I have family in Hong Kong) which will be a nightmare for future visits.
If we can get to a position where we know the spike proteins in circulation then mRNA vaccine rollout can be done very quickly but that would need high level worldwide surveillance which will take time to set up. Flu vaccine rollout is rather more simplistic as we just look at the strains that are in circulation in Australasia during our Summers and assume that they wonât have mutated much come our Winters, but I donât think a similar approach will work with C19.
